What a spirited debate. The way I see it, Mr. Joseph et al can list the car(s) for 100k for all I care. That doesn't mean it will sell for that price. I laughed at a 95 Cab that was listed somewhere recently for 45k - give me a break. I may be off by a bit but IIRC there were around 70,000 993's produced. We aren't exactly talking about Ferrari F-50 numbers here. I also agree with B-Line and Old Guy that the Turbos will always be worth more. How many '97 Turbos are there again?? I may be a little less emotional in valuing any of my cars, but the way I tend to approach it is "if the **** hits the fan and I have to dump this thing for cash tomorrow, what is it worth"? My worthless two cents.....

FWIW - I was only tracking the asking prices at the dealers to see if there was a trend. It turns out there is...the asking prices has been increasing lately. As dealers are in the business of actually selling their cars, I had assumed that these cars were, in the least, holding value well...if not actually increasing. At the same time, the asking prices for turbos has been dropping.

What conclusion would you draw from this data?

Side Note: Although spirited at times, this debate shows the respect in which we hold our fellow enthusiasts.

no...Turbo asking prices have been increasing also the last 6 months from what I have seen on autotrader, cars.com Etc!.

DC history doesnt support your theory, Right now TTs are on their way back up. Low mile models are north of 80k again. I dont see many 993 NA cars above 80 even in asking prices. I keep tabs on the TT prices and they have been moving up for about 6 months. You can find one with 75K miles in the 60-70K range but you are talking low mile examples so well discard those, as well as the 98's that are less than $35K with high miles. So as long as youre talking low mile TT vs 98's there is still a 20K diff.

Let's just consider low mileage cars in nice condition:

3 years ago, a 1997 turbo was almost $100K....at the same time, a nice C2S was over $60K.

Now, the turbo is over $80K and the C2S is still over $60K.

Turbo price is down 20% - 25% and C2S has not changed.

My conclusion was that the C2S was holding up better than the turbo...where did I err?

DC your error is easy to spot. The equation you use shows TTs continuting to depreciate. Right now
and for the last six months, they are going up . Thats the problem in your math.
And YES I will fly to Cape Cod and buy you a beer. I might just do it anyway!! I have to go to Nashua NH next month!!

BTW there were 630 something 97TTs delivered to NA.

In porsches it seems, and someone correct me if I am wrong they depreciate to some point, and stabliize, it might have taken the TT awhile longer given the close to $120K price tag initially. the lower priced cars get there more quickly. BUt we're around that point now. So now that the prices are starting to appreciate in asking numbers the depreciation trend may be over. So you have to start using a new set of numbers. IF the C2S were to appreciate faster than the TT you might be right, one day. But historically the Turbo is more sought after for all years it was available. I dont see why that would change and frankly I dont see why one would want a NA car over a fully boosted model.

The #1 requested car on THALIST (the last I heard) was a C2S. Dave Maynard confirmed this as well - he gets more requests for them than for anything else.

FWIW - I chose a C2S over a Turbo and I could have bought either. I prefer the feel of the RWD and both are more car than I am a driver.

For now though, my fingers are tired and I need a beer.
