Post rotor question....

Hello all.

Well its time for brakes. I have got PFC 90 compound pads and need to do something with my
rotors. They are "lipped" at the outer edge.

My question is: Has anyone had theirs turned (of course providing they are still within legal spec)?

Is it advisable to replace only?

Who has the better pricing on rotors?

Thanks for the help,

Chris

I was told by two very good mechanics whom I trust that "lipping" is not an issue as long as the rotors are within spec.

My rotors have been clearly "lipped" for at least 6 months (About 5k miles and 10 track DE events) with absolutley no issues. YMMV

Hey Chris. If you can , go only OEM or a Brembo set up. I have learned from experience, for 993 cars, the "average" after market rotors and pads are crap !! PERIOD !

Try to get a brake cooling kit as well.

I am goimg to do a brake job soon as well. Did a search to find out from Rennlist experience.

Result: Will most certainly buy OEM. Other brands seem to be a risky investment!

Hi Chris.

I bought my first 911 about 7 months ago. The PPI turned up slightly warped rear rotors and recommended turning them in the interests of time (as opposed to ordering them.) The previous owner agreed to split the cost with me and I had it done not realizing this isn't recommended.

Overall, it has not presented any operational difficulties except when in a tight turn on the track -- I hear a slight squealing noise. I can’t tell if it is louder from the inside or the outside wheel. Upon heading this noise, two different instructors asked if I had the rear rotors turned. To this question I sheepishly admitted my ignorance.

Apparently, the slight bend in the chassis in a turn causes the edges of the pads to catch the no-longer-rounded edges on the drilled holes in the rotors. I haven’t needed to change the pads yet. I’m curious to see what they look like after grinding against those knife-like holes on 4 track days.

Does anyone else have any experience with this?

I usually had my rotors turned. Could get a couple more track weekends out of them. The shops that know what they are doing turn them and hit the holes with a tool to champher(sp?) the edge. Worked fine for me.

Net1...Thanks for the tip of Gabe at Strasse. I called as he was leaving the shop and he set down his things and took the time to look up rotors for me. I was impressed! He seems to be a great guy therefore I will order rotors from him

He quoted about $87 each for the rotors front and rear. I think this a great price. He said they are Zimmerman which is the suplier to Porsche, BMW and MB.

Thanks for all the help..

Chris,

The rotors are fine so long as they are not thinner than minimum spec. The lip is absolutely NO problem, on the street or track. I, too, use PFC track pads (compound 97) and they worked great on my "lipped" rotors (which subsequently developed the "normal" hairline cracks and had to be replaced, but hey, this is after 65K with lots of DEs). In any event, I wouldn't spend the time/money to turn. Just use them up and replace with OEM rotors (not that much more than aftermarket, and I get porsche peace-of-mind when it comes to braking! )

Edward,

After doing some research in the archives, I have found that Zimmerman is a OEM supplier but their aftermarket rotors are not the exact same as from the P-car dealer. After some thought, I will stick with dealer parts, especially when it involves brake parts and track days.

Thanks for the input.....

Chris,

I've heard the same regarding Zimmerman being an OEM supplier. OTOH, I seem to recall in a previous post many, many moons ago that the Zimmerman rotors aren't painted (the OEMs are). Thus, rust will form everywhere on the rotor (except on the rotor faces, of course). This is purely a cosmetic issue if you can stand it, or you can paint them yourself. Just thought I'd mention it.

The PO of my 95 had the rotors turned before I bought my car. Not saying that turning is bad... but this was one poor "turn job." The inner 2 or 3 mm on the front right was not turned all the way, so there was a bump out on the braking surface doing weird things to the pads. After nearly no time at all - a few thousand miles of owning it, I was starting to get brake vibrations any time they got hot. I measured the rotor thickness and they were WAY UNDER SPEC. Replaced immediately and life goes on happily.

BTW: I bought from Vertex... Zimmerman aftermarkets. They work just great as far as I can tell, but would probably be concerned if I were going on the track.
