gt3 leathers seats into a 993 (DIY)
Just finished my gt3 seat install tonight. What a great seat!!!!
As most of you know the gt3 seats comes with sidemounts and rails that are meant for a 996 body. I was extremely skeptical of doing this upgrade because i was concerned on how i would get a good mount / slider setup to a 993. ViperBob convinced me that this was not difficult and he was RIGHT. Thanks Bob for another great upgrade.
Now, I thought i'd share the upgrade and the steps needed to do it. All in all it took me about 45 mins/seat to do a complete install.
Bill of Materials:
----------------------
- 2 gt3 seats.
- 1 R-9079 Breay-Karuse Side Seat Mount Bracket (driver's side)
- 1 R-9078 Brey-Krause Side Seat Mount Bracket (passenger side)
- 2 sparco sliders
- 8 grade 8.8 bolts, locking nuts and washers.
Step 1:
----------------------
- Dremel the second hole from bottom (of the picture below) to slightly enlarge it. this is to get the Brey-Krause mount to align with the sparco slider. one side already fits and this one needs to be dremeled approx 1/3".
Step 2:
-----------------------
- Using bolt, locking nut & washer mount sparco sliders to brey-krause side mount.
- Do this for all four sliders.
- you will need to have 2 bolts/washers/nuts per slider.
Step 3:
-------------------------
- Assemble the set, put on the seat belt receptacle and slide on the center part of the sliders. see pics below.
Step 4:
----------------------------
- Mount sidemount/slider assembly to seat. this is a good time to point out the brey-krause adapters not only weigh less than the gt3 mounts/rails, but they also allow you tilt the seat back slightly. so mount it the way you'd prefer.
Step 5:
-----------------------------
- install seat with the four bolts that came with your original seats. please note that you orig. seats came with 6 per seat. these only use 4 per seat.
VIOLA You are done.
A very very easy install and a great upgrade. Thanks again ViperBob
As a side note, this only gets the seat nice and low in the car. i'm guessing that you gain 1.5" of headroom. The flip side is if you are too short you may need to figure out how to space it up.
If any of you are considering this seat/setup i highly recommend viperbob. he offers the best price i've seen on these seats and knows what you need to make it seemless!!!! As always DISCLAIMER: i have no affiliation with viperbob, i'm just a delighted customer.
Cheers,
Boris

i got them from ViperBob (Bob Brooks) at http://www.devek.net He is running a special on these seats. I believe he currently sells them for $2,400 US for a pair, but you'll have to ask him.

Looks great Boris.
Do they no longer make the 993 version of the GT3 seats in leather (993.521.901/902.01) with the factory supplied 993 width side brackets and sliders? Thats the version that I bought a few years ago, and they bolted right in with no modifications. Or are the 996 versions all that are available now?

I love the fact that when Boris shows up at the shop, he brings his scale to weigh every little piece going on and coming off his car. The seats look great in a cab BTW where they can truly be seen.
For anyone interested, the 993s have a little different mounting than the 996s. We use the Brey Krause GT3 mount to get the seat to fit properly. You can use the 996 mounts that come with the seat, but you will sit a little higher than the current factory seat.

Ahhh i was waiting for someone to ask about weight.
Base seat weighed in at 16.7 lbs
Sliders/side mounts/ seat belt receptacle/ 4 bolts weighed in at 9.0lbs
Total = $25.7lbs/seat
My original seats weighed in at 49.5lbs /seat
The two spare bolts/seat weighed in at 2 ounces.
Therefore a weight loss of 47.85lbs
And i must admit that it is noticeable.
Cheers,
Boris

Boris - Thanks for the write up. How have the seats affected the leg room of the car? I am tall and I keep the factory seats at the full back - full low and slightly reclined position. I see you have gained 1.5 of head room - did you give anything up in legroom?
Thanks
Tom

Tom,
I'm not sure (i'm 5'8") so it was never a concern and i didn't measure it. However, i don't think there would be any difference in leg room based on the design of the seat.
Cheers,
Boris

Bob - Can the BK mounts somehow be used to mount the GT3 seats directly to the floor? I already have these seats and since I have a rear seat delete kit there is no reason for me to ever adjust the seats so I don't need the sliders. I assume I would sit a bit lower and save a little bit of weight as well?
