Default Foolproof way to adjust Pss-9s?

It seems that I am having difficulty figuring out how to adjust my PSS-9s. I just learned that the "notch" is on the top for the rears. What I'm hoping for is some rule for all four shocks such as "CCW to loosen, CW to tighten", or something that even a doofus can use... perhaps without actually pulling the wheels off and looking at the adjuster. Any help would be appreciated.

Steve,

To adjust the shocks, turn the **** counterclockwise to find the stiffest setting (1) and then turn the dial back, feeling for clicks. (+=stiffer) I have an open deck trailer and it made adjusting the shocks very easy. Since I was under the car, I could look at where the "1" was. I took a dab of paint to mark this setting on the shock body, not the ****.

I thought that (+ = softer) as it increased the number?

They are such a PITA. Yes 9 is soft but basically it appears that + means more firm (i find the things totally confusing with respect to the lack of an indexing mark, etc)

Steve: I took a Sharpie and wrote a big "+" with an arrow on mine (that I can actually see when under there trying to do a quick adjustment). I know that the "+" means firm and the direction to turn to make it more firm and that's all I care about. I can never feel the "clicks" on the PSS-9s (unlike the JICs that have a very firm click). I used to set mine at full firm in the back and a bit less than firm in the front when I tracked or autocrossed the 993.

So + means firm but higher the number means softer? That seems completlely backwards. I guess I may have been adjusting them backwards, I will have to check under my car when I get a chance.

I like the rule that says CCW is stiffer. Its counter intuitive, but its a rule I can live with. I ran 1 on the rear and 3 on the front at Willow Springs, and would like to try out full soft (9) for the street. I screwed something up, because its pretty stiff on the street, so I have no idea where its set right now. Thanks for the tips. lefty stiffy, righty softy. got it.

Steve,

If the relative stiffness of PSS9s on 993s is similar to the stiffness on 996s, the softest setting will make your car handle like a pig (or a marshmellow) at any speed over 40 mph. I run 4/5, and I think that I want to make it stiffer still, despite the awful streets around DC. Just my two cents.

Steve,

When I would drive to the track I did not want to jack up the car. I would just take some boards with me and drive up on them. My car is very low but that gave me enough room to reach the adjustment dials and with a little extendable mirror (Like a Dentist uses) I could see the settings clearly.

I drive with full stiff on the track and full soft on the street. The street handling on my car is just fine at full soft...other apparently have a different experience.

Like Martin stated above,
I also run softest setting on the street and firmest on the track. I works just the way I hoped it would. The softest setting is still providing acceptable handling. Just my 2 cents

Default pss9 adjustablitiy

I too have run softest setting for street and firmest setting for track. i'm able to adjust with vehicle on ground....oh yea I'm on the ground too. once you get the feel for it, you don't even need to see what you're doing....you can feel it.

let me note also that I've been disappointed as well with difficulty to use middle settings. design doesn't provide for clear enough distinction between the 9 different settings.

Funny you guys are talking about this. I was at the track all weekend at an Audi Event and the Porsches there all had PSS9s but none of them were adjusted right. I was underneath cars dialing them all stiffer of course and luckily I did it CCW because it is so counter intuitive. On 993s the dial is at the bottom of the shock tower not the top, on the 996 rear it is pretty hard to get to on top.

CMM-
Are you by chance talking about the Gingerman event? I do a bunch of Audi club events around here too, so you GOTTA tell me which 993 drivers had their PSS9s set wrong, since I probably know them. Too funny. Sure hope it wasn't Chuck or Will. (is it Christian? if so, we met at Grattan.)

Eric,
No, it wasn't Will or me. Neither of us could make it, unfortunately. I heard from Christian that it was a great event. I'm going to Road America next week, and am going to try full stiff with PSS9s and sways, to try to dial out the understeer from 235/285 MPSCs. Will you be there at the RA Audi event?

I felt my ears burning, so I thought I'd check in.

I wish I could have made the ACNA event at Gingerman last week (excuse = Dances with Dirt and a "bidness" trip) - according to Christian, it was a great time. My next event is at Grattan in a couple of weeks with the Motor City BMW guys. One of my favorite tracks.

Eric, I hope we get to see you again soon.

Chuck, please post a report of your suspension experiments when you get back from RA. Wish I could go with you. The 235/285 combo sounds good, although I'm not sure I could squeeze them into my fenders on 18" wheels (you've got them on your 17's, right?).
