Default 1997-1998 ECU

I keep hearing a references to having a spare ECU handy in case of a problem. I am looking for a 1997/1008 ECU for my 1996 C4S so that I can get it reprogrammed. How and where are you guys getting these spare ECU's (and how much?) and why do I keep reading references to having a spare handy? All comments appreciated. Thanks

Mark,

I don't recall anyone mentioning keeping a spare ECU on the garage shelf "just in case". Especially new at $1,800'ish and used at $1,200'ish.

People with '96 cars look for them, as you are, so they can be chipped. I have a '97 C2, but it is a early model year build so it came with a '96 (unchippable) ECU. Total nut to buy a used ECU and have chipped would be about $2,200. Not worth the money IMO. A lot of mod dough for 10 or 15 hp.

Perhaps you are getting ECU and spare DME relay mixed up?

I too have never heard of keeping a spare ECU but have read numerous warnings of keeping a spare DME relay handy.

I think you are right. I am getting the two issues confused. What is a spare DME relay and why is it needed? I agree with the comments regarding the price of the chip upgrade. I'm going to spend the money on the suspension. Thanks again for all of your comments. Mark

By the way, I do agree that for the $, suspension is the most important mod. Yet, a quality chip is the simplest and cheapest way to gain 15 hp. Compare that to the $10k + it would cost to convert to a 3.8 liter engine for the extra 20 hp.

I installed the new DME relay, and put the old (but still functioning OK) one in the relay box. Seems like a cheap insurance policy.
