Post Motor sound package question

I'd like a little better "sound" from my car. Does the factory "motor sound package" modify the exhaust or only the air box?
Thanks!

solsrch,

There are many, many posts on this topic, but I believe the "motor sound" package consisted of:

1) Drilled airbox cover
2) Different p/n muffler with a little better sound than stock.
3) I also believe the exhaust tips were different.

Others may add or correct this.

If your aim is "a little better sound", I would suggest purchasing Robin Sun's "RSR" mufflers (p-car.com). They are stock mufflers slightly modified that will give you the sound you desire. I, and many others, have bought them and are VERY happy with the results. The sound is just what a class car like the 993 needs. I agree that the stock mufflers are too refined.

You can purchase the drilled airbox from Gert at carnewal.com or others. It is a factory p/n and simply replaces yours - 2 minute job. Again, I and many other, have done this and the sound at WOT is very pleasing.

Hope this helps. You can do a search under "RSR mufflers" or "mufflers" or "motorsound" or "airbox cover" and come up with enough reading for a week. My post above is a quick and dirty synopsis.

Good luck and feel free to post back with any specific questions....

Solsrch,

Mike is correct!
My car has the factory motorsound package and its still pretty tame. I've heard many good things on this board about Robins' RSR's!!
I ordered a set a few weeks back and they showed up this past Friday.I will be putting them on this week and will be able to give you some feedback.

Cheers!

You can also drill your stock cover and achieve the same results. The drill pattern is on the air box lid.

RSR mufflers are great and I don't normally like aftermarket mufflers. A little more growl and no resonance.

A winning combo: motorsound airbox and RSR's. It has growl under WOT and is quiet enough to not annoy neighbors.

Two thumbs up from me for the drilled out airbox and Robin's RSR mufflers. No resonance, although some have said the RSR's are STILL too quiet. Saves 6 lbs per muffler, too.

Oh, yeah, try removing your soundtray under the engine. Your valve guides will thank you for it.

we should take a poll to find out how many of us have gone with the RSR upgrade.. I am curious to know.

The RSR mod is AWESOME. To even better this, Robin is a GREAT guy to deal with. I wish I could someday meet him and thank him personally.

Thanks for all the info! I was actually considering going with a fabspeed exhaust in addition to drilling out the air box. I don't use my cab as a commuter car so based on old threads I thought the maxflow might be a better bet for a fun sound versus the well executed RSRs.

Thumbs up

I'd like to add my vote in favour of RSRs and a motorsound airbox. They make a big difference. They seem to be gaining some popularity here in the UK though Gert can can probably indicate just how many there are over here.

Cheers,

David

Just installed rsr's to my 98 993 and they were easy to install and sound great. Robin was a delight to deal with and the mufflers look great.Regards, Pat

solsrch,

You would be very happy with the RSR's. If you read Robin's "mission statement" on what he wanted to accomplish with this mod, it probably aligns perfectly with the result you want.

I was uneasy about an exhaust mod, as a basically "factory stock is better" type of guy. As soon as I fired up the RSR's, I knew they were a perfect sound for the 993. Besides, externally they ARE factory stock looking - only you will know they've been "tweaked". Same is true with the drilled airbox cover - it looks like it's supposed to.

RSR's are the best thing I have bought for my car. The sound is loud enough but not to loud. I would definately suggest getting the RSR's and Motorsound box or just as easily drill your oem box.

Ditto! <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" />

I added the Motorsound Option Chrome Exhaust Tips (look very sharp!) to Robin's RSR Mufflers along with the Motorsound Option Airbox and the sound is AWESOME!

My 993 now sounds like my brothers vintage 1978 911. This is what a Porsche should sound like! <img border="0" alt="[jumper]" title="" src="graemlins/jumper.gif" />
