Talking Going to the dragstrip... Went & got kicked out

Hey guys,

I know - I know. "its not a drag car"

Ya know... You don't HAVE TO abuse the car just because your at a dragstrip.

Anyhow, I am going with a gaggle of my performance car buds. We try to go every year.

Pal's include:

'02 Chevy Z06 (405 HP version)
'01 Boxster S
'99 996 coupe
'01 Subaru WRX
'02 Audi A4 quattro
etc. etc.

Its a few hours drive, but we are "hard core."

DE's etc. are in the mix too. We do ALL the performance car event kinda stuff every year.

The drag track hates us. They NEVER announce our cars or names when we line up. Its always "All right folks, we have Hank in the Pepsi lane in his '77 Maverick..." Then the loud speaker goes dead as they forget the sportscar guy in the other lane.

Oh well. Last year I was there in my C2 Turbo (ran a high 11). No domestic car could hack it. That's no way to make friends I guess.

I am taking my digital camera, I might get some good action shots of me "hole shot'n" the Z06 or the 996. Maybe even one or two of them passing me at the big end...

Enjoying my car.

Michael,
If you do get some pics from the strip I'd like to see them.

I have yet to take my car to the drag strip not because of a lack of interest but because I don't have a group of friends motivated enough to do so. Alone I would not be game enough to show up by myself not knowing anyone or any thing about the drag strip. Going with others would make the experience more fun.

I agree with you in participating in all of the different types of auto performance events. These cars were made for performance so lets enjoy them in all ways possible.

Someday just for another one of life's experiences I will go to a drag strip but in the mean time I would be interested to hear how it all went for you.

Enjoy it!

Cool

Okay, we all gathered, and headed up to the strip...

We set our cruise controls on "stun" for an hour & a half.

<img src="http://boards.rennlist.com/upload/993100even.jpg" alt=" - " />

I tried to "run" the Z06 from 90 MPH once... But this is all I saw:

<img src="http://boards.rennlist.com/upload/BossLookZ06.jpg" alt=" - " />

I took more action shots as we cruised:

<img src="http://boards.rennlist.com/upload/BossLookBox.jpg" alt=" - " />

<img src="http://boards.rennlist.com/upload/BossLook996.jpg" alt=" - " />

Then, we get to the track & find that it is closed to sportscar traffic! Come to find out it is an "AMC day" and no other makes are allowed through the traps. We try to convince the track management, but they show us the door. We all did not really mind. It was no big deal. We stopped for breakfast & made the best of it, then headed back home.

Here are a few shots as we rolled home (the Z06 stayed to watch AMC's).

<img src="http://boards.rennlist.com/upload/CenterRearView996&Box.jpg" alt=" - " />

<img src="http://boards.rennlist.com/upload/rearview996&box.jpg" alt=" - " />

I ran the Boxster S from 60 - 130MPH. The Box & I went down to 4th and matted the gas. We stayed even for some of 4th, then my car pulled well away. I stayed in it HARD (the road was abandoned) and here is what my Speedo showed me:

<img src="http://boards.rennlist.com/upload.jpg" alt=" - " />

Oh well. Fun day no matter. BTW. I rolled next to the 996 & did the 4th gear than mat it thing too. He pulled on me through 4th & we evened up our acceleration once we both shifted to 5th. Nice runner those 996's

Thanks Jim Bob,

I always love your insight. Thank you for your obivious heartfelt concern for my well being.

It was really no big feat though. As this digital cam has a "big 'ol" color veiwer & I did not have to take my vision off the road or look through "da kamera" to use it.

No flame war needed BTW from anyone, as I very much appreciate the math lesson JBJ. I would hope that everyone like's my pics actually. As we have learned, driving at speed is easier for some - than it is for others anyway.

Phil put it best anyhow: "almost 200 mph" is no big thing for an over210mph verteran pro like myself.

Hugs & Kisses,

"Darwinn"

Is your '95 stock? BTW, you should be able to calibrate your speed using the tach (assuming, of course, that the tach is accurate). I've seen the mph per thousand rpm info in the original road tests.

Ole JimBob tole me
Rpm/ratio x tire/5280 x 60= mph

7150/2.44 x 6.315=18,505.02/5280= 3.504x60= 210mph

7150rpm,final ratio= 2.44, N2 footprint=6.315'

onlely need 940 posts to be a guru! <img src="graemlins/xyxwave.gif" border="0" alt="[bigbye]" />

JD,

Oh man, I am one of Rays biggest fans (really)! I hope he goes easy on me. He knows I am okay, I think.

Phil, by what I have seen of your personal "toy box," you figured out math & stuff real well.

Speedraser, is the car stock?.. Well, its an ImagineAuto.com 993... Not too much can stay too stock from that place.

Ruf-Racer, 7150 RPM to get to 210 MPH? Hmmmm. Well heck. I did not log into memory what my tach was at when I clicked the above digi pic. Dang, might have to go out & do it again.

Phil,

Cant give Imagine credit for the exhaust... Its all Robin Sun - RSR's / Imagine installed.

There is not any better performance muffler for the 993 period.
