need new shocks
The nice guys over at custom alignment told me today that my shocks are just about toast.
I've searched the archives, and have a feel for what's out there, but I'm going to ask for help anyway since I know nothing about this stuff.
My car was lowered by the PO (or one of them...), I like the current ride height, so I don't want that changed.
My shocks are just the stock shocks (green ones).
So, my question is, should I replace them with stock shocks from porsche, or can (should) I go with Bilsteins or something else.
I saw the M030 kit on carnewal, but I don't think I need everything in that kit. Any tips and help is appreciated.
Thanks for the help, and sorry for bringing up this topic for the zillionth time.

The car will see some track. I like a bit of a stiffer ride. I do know I don't like the bit of roll I'm feeling now in the car.
Budget isn't so much of an issue, but I still need to get anything approved by my CFO (wife).
I've been reading some other posts, and since it's possible that my car is lower than ROW, and that might not give me the best setup, maybe I need to do the whole M030-Bilstein setup?
Is there anyway to tell if I've got the M030 springs?
If I'm doing this, and I'm missing out on something by not having the whole M030 setup, I'd be willing to look into doing the whole thing.
Sigh... I know now why so much has been written about this.

I've been following the suspension threads with quite an interest, because I'm going to upgrade soon as well.
From that I've heard on this board and from people I've talked to, I would go with the pss-9 with RS sway bar setup and monoballs.
Advantages:
a) fully adjustable ride height, RS/ROW/whatever
b) adjustable shocks ( keep it firm for the track, soft for the street )
c) allows you to tune the oversteer/understeer via the shocks OR the sway bars.
There's another TT owner around here that has the pss-9's with the non adjustable sway bars. I took a ride in his car at thunderhill. Absolutely amazing! If you want, maybe we can meet for a drive so that you can check it out yourself.

I looked into the shock situation recently and found out the following information:
Bilstein was not licensed until recently to manufacture 993 shocks due to contractual agreements. The part numbers are separate for the right and left sides and are located easily on the Bilstein website. This application is not well known due to the fact the shocks are recently available and the cars are just starting to need shocks based on their age. A set of 4 heavy duty Bilsteins might run about $1100, but you need to speak to a suspension expert to determine if the ride height springs you have make this option impossible.
The fully adjustable system PSS09 costs about $600-700 more. This system will give you quite a bit of flexibility for adjustments. The softest settings are still stiffer than stock settings by about 20%, according to what I learned.
Dealers say that the M030 system is quite matched for performance. This is what they recommend. The spring rates need to be matched for the shocks and this was developed by Porsche.
Oh, yes. The latest issue of Excellence (October 2002) has an excellent article about 993 suspension issues by Jim Pasha on page 147. He describes spring/shock combination issues and gives recommendations.
Be sure to let everyone know what you did, and how it rides and whether you would do it again. Good luck.

Jeff, I'm up for a drive anytime. Let me know.
So here's my thoughts so far:
The ideal path for me is to get the PSS9s now, and add the adjustable stablizers later (so I don't have to fork over all the bucks right away).
Now, the question is whether I can use these shocks with my springs. The highest point of my rear fender is around 25.25". The front is around 25.75". Does this kind of a ride height give any clues to the kind of springs.

Ahh.. perfect.
I just had a look at the car. No brand markings on the springs, but the front passenger spring had green marks on it, and the driver side had red marks. No marks on the rear (that I could see).
Anyway, I have a feeling the pss-9's are the front runner unless there is some reason I wouldn't want them??

Just thought I'd add my .02 since I had the same situation you do (PO had Eibach lowering kit with stock shocks). I purchased the Bilstein HD's from Gert. I am very happy with the setup for both street driving, and the 3-4 DE's per year. However, I was looking for an economical suspension upgrade. I may upgrade my sway bars down the road.

Bobby:
I am over in Walnut Creek and have the complete PSS-9 and RS swaybar setup. Drop me an e-mail if you would like to see/discuss the setup, look at some of the custom stuff I did to improve on the PSS-9 installation as well as take a drive.

I also have the PSS-9 with the RS bars. I just got back from Thunderhill and I second the opinion that this is a great set-up! I' m in the bay area and have a 993tt-s also. You can e-mail if you have any questions or even want to see the car.

As a humble 964 owner with a recent suspension nightmare still causing problems, my first suggestion is this:
If you want to change to M030 or PSS9 or whatever, try and get a ride in someones car who already has it done. My lowered 964 is now very noisy over bumps. I'm not sure if this is "normal" so I now have a wrangle with my garage to contend with. Try befroe you tinker!!

JohnF,
Out of curiosity are you referring to a M030 or PSS-9 system that was put on your car?
p.s. There is nothing humble about owning a 964. <img src="graemlins/drink.gif" border="0" alt="[cherrsagai]" />
