Post Brake Bleeding

Sorry for the basics of this question, but I am having trouble bleeding my brakes. Is there a reason that I couln't attach a long hose to the bleeder valve and simply cap the end before I took my foot off the pedal while sitting in the drivers seat?

My mechanic said that it would be okay, but I didn't ask about about the long hose.

Tried to use Griots "one man brake bleeder" without much success.

Buy the Power Bleeder. Best in town, and very easy to use.

You need to use a pressure bleeder not a vacuum bleeder like the Griot's one. IMHO the only thing it is good for is getting the fluid out of the resevior.

Go to motive products web site and get there pressure bleeder. Robin's web site has step by step directions on how to bleed your brakes.
Brake bleed procedure

Don't do this the way you were thinking you will damage your master cylinder and probably not end up with a good bleed.

Ditto to all of the above.

I ruined two master cylinders on old '76 using the "Costello pump the brakes while Abbott opens the bleed valve" method. Never had good success with hand vacuum pump except for causing blisters on my hand.

Pressure bleed is only way to go; put add'l 50K on old '76, 120k on old '84 and have 60+k on present 993 with no master cylinder problems.

Also, don't forget the clutch. Except for the TT, (and possibly the C4S's, which have the same brakes as the TT's), the hydraulic systems for the brakes and clutch use the same reservoir, and the old fluid in the clutch system will absorb water and become contaminated over time.

Greg,

Thanks for the link to Motive. I just ordered the Euro Bleeder over the net. $44.95 + 6.24 shipping. Sure was easy!

Thumbs up

J Phillips,

I'd listen to Greg - he bleeds his brakes more than anyone I have ever met.

Actually, Greg and I have achieved great results using the Motive bleeder. If I could only get him to give it back...

Thanks all! Lesson learned. Since my car is brakeless as I type, I ordered the Motive unit and am having it shipped overnight. The shipping cost more that the bleeder, but I am tired of not having my car.

Now for the tough question...anyone want to buy a barely used Griots bleeder cheap?

I am just keeping it in good shape, I would hate for it to get rusted up between your annual flushes

I bleed my brakes so often because it is such a fun thing to do with the Motive Bleeder. ( Maybe they will give me one if I keep pushing their products!)
They also have a good price on the ATE brake fluid.

Wink

I prefer the ATE Type 200; same high temp performance and price as Stupid Blue without the damn blue dye (which stains everything it contacts)

I have used a Mity-Vac bleeder($30) and Motul Racing 600 fluid for several years with good results. Is there something about 993s that is different than 911s? Sure beats the turkey baster for draining the Master cylinder. Trouble is, my wife won't take the turkey baster back <g>.
