I posted this on the 997 forum and thought maybe this is where it belonged, so any thoughts you guys might have I appreciate.
Looking for the thoughts of this brilliant community...every so often, more lately, I think of owning an old air cooled version...964 or 993 of the 911 and selling mine, a 2010 C4S cab, one owner (me) 6-speed manual, PTS Turquoise Blue, 97K miles...all service records...mostly (90% dealer serviced), Natural Brown full leather plus I also added the center console I got from Porsche after a consulting job, TUBI exhaust, Porsche SS, HRE wheels. In 2011 I was rear ended and the car was repaired flawlessly and i never had any issues over the last 14 years related to that accident.
I'm also 77 and if I don't at least explore the feasibility of it now...when will I? I'm physically healthy with no issues, knock wood...keep thinking!
Then tonight I go out to dinner and for a drink alone and as I leave the restaurant during a gorgeous Naples Sunset in my recently beautifully detailed Turquoise Blue 911 and put the roof down and listen to that Tubi sing with the wind ripping through my hair well **** it will have to be quite a 993 to turn my head!
I also had to sell a house in NJ a 100 year old colonial farmhouse that we renovated to the hilt...that I never thought I could sell and, ten years later I never think about it...so who knows?
Just seems like such a daunting search! Soooo many cars to consider all over the place. I'll turn it over to the Porsche Gods and see what they bring me! I'm always pretty lucky and maybe my angels, of which I have many, can guide me. Like that old Stephen Bishop song...I'll throw up my heart and see where it lands!
I seriously doubt that there's anything we can say to "sell you" on a 993. You'll have to sell yourself on one. There may be others to offer advice but mine is: Go see and drive as many 993's you can and be prepared to travel to see the nice ones. The more you do, the more you'll decide a) if you want one and b) if you do, what color/s and option/s you'll want. Noting where you live and that you seem to enjoy your cabriolet, you'll find that there are some excellent 993 cabs out there that are available at a discount vs. the coupes. Happy hunting!
Hi Tommy,
The 993 will feel downright raw compared to the car you drive now.
Along with this, it is much more involving to drive due to the nature of the animal and the manual shifting.
The preferred cars in the community are the 6-speed versions because, although reliable, the Tiptronic auto is not as involving.
The coupes command a slight premium over the cabriolet.
Here is a list of why a 993 & 964 vs other 911 series cars: https://993servicerepair.blogspot.co...newer-911.html

Compared to your 997, a 993 is small, loud, slow, uncomfortable, and well, primitive. But that's actually why we like 'em.
I personally love the way the 993 (and 964) straddle the line between vintage and modern cars, but most passengers just say, “Hmm, it’s pretty tight and noisy in here…”
First off, you have a very clean and unique 997 there. Its beautiful, so why sell? Just want a change? Second question is why air cooled?
I sold my 997.2 C2S to get a 993 C2S. It was the correct move for me because I wanted a more Classic air cooled analog driving experience. As the guys say its slower, loud and less refined than newer 911s but to me its the best Porsche Ive ever owned. Size is absolutely perfect and power is adequate and looks are stunning. I struggled wanting a 993 TT after testing driving one but didnt think the cost over the C2S was justified. I also appreciate the fact that I can work on mine. At almost 30yrs old, they need to be maintained so be sure either you can do it or you know a good old school mechanic.
My wife can bury me in mine because Ill never sell. I never said that about any of the newer models Ive owned. Just my prospective, yours may differ. Enjoy the search if you decide to head in this direction.
I'll echo what NC Trackrat said - drive as many as you can. Like today, there were so many different models/body styles and even differences from year to year of the same model. And because they're not as powerful, the extra weight of this model or that model might make a difference to you. Driving the various models is the only way to figure out what suits your fancy.

I actually love the smaller size...I think Porsche made a gigantic error enlarging these cars!

Thank you for your take on the switch...I love smaller and more involved...I have an orange 85 CJ-7 Jeep and the old school looks and the lack of refinements are the charm...I'm old and I love old! I don't care about the speed either. If it wasn't for the color of mine I'd have no 2nd thoughts but that TB is soooo gorgeous! Thanks for taking the time...you guys are great!
How'd you find yours? Is the Arena one yours? If it is a fab color! I'm a color guy so Arena, speed yellow, any bright blue, red inside...even non-metallic paint...I prefer!
