Default How much oil consumption is normal for high mileage 993?

Hey All,

How much oil should a 993 motor consume if say daily driven but high mileage (90k+)? Just as a rough ball park, like how many quarts per 3k mi or so.

About a quart per 3K should be OK. My car with 121K miles consumes a bit less than that, I think.

1 shop told me that 1qt per 600 miles is still within Porsche factory specs. Is that really true?

wow a qt every 600 would be insane :P

Just checking as I thought a quart every 3k or so wasn't too bad

IIRC-
Factory specs allowed consumption of up to 1qt./1000 miles.
Seems high to me, too, but there's a lot of oil being used in there and it's doing a big job!

Cheers-

Just an FYI, as I have experienced this, and Bruce Anderson has referenced it in tech articles as well: some 964 and 993 motors will quickly burn off a quart or so if filled to the top mark on the dipstick, then stay at the middle mark or a bit below that for many miles. Best bet is to fill it to that mid-point to begin with.

Ever since I started letting my motor idle for around 20-30 seconds before shut-off (long enough for most of the oil to return to the tank) I no longer have ANY smoke on startup and the oil no longer self-levels itself to the middle mark.

Factory spec IIRC is 1qt per 600 mi or 1 Liter per 1000 km, more or less the same...

My SC did that, but it has tired piston rings and 175K miles ;-) the 993 practically never needed a topoff, then again I had new valves guides dues to the carbopn buildup repair.

WOW! That is astounding! Your car doesn't use any oil between changes? I'm jealous.

My car has 40k miles, and uses about 1 quart every 600 miles. Ouch!

It may be how I drive it - I live literally about a mile from my office, so the car is driven daily for 5 minutes or so at a time. I'm no mechanic, but I assume that would make it burn more oil. Then again, I may need a valve job.

Any pro mechanics have a comment on frequent short hops and oil consumption?
