What are the best choices for an aftermarket 993 car alarm system? I am looking for one that includes some sort of a paging/notification feature which immediately contacts the owner when the alarm is set off. Prices? Reliability? Sources? etc. Also, are they able to be used along with the standard 993 immobilizer or is the immobilizer uninstalled or disconnected?
Thank you.
Thank you.

Henry,
I really don't think you need anything other than the Imomobilzer! Many of us hate it. I happen to coexist well with it, but I am strange.
If they want your car, It won't matter what you have for an alarm.

While I think everyone should avoid being careless, Theft is not a very big problem with Porsches. Out of 7578 Porsche 911s (996) made in model year 2000, 11 were stolen. That's a rate of 1.45 cars per thousand, and ranks in 136th place on the cars most stolen list. I have a feeling that most of those 11 thefts were by very professional thieves, who could likely disarm just about any aftermarket alarm. If anyone would like to see the full data, it is available at <a href="http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/theft/2002-11443.txt" target="_blank">NHTSA stolen vehicle records</a>
After looking at the data further, here's some interesting information. In 1994 (before the maligned immobilizer) 29 of 1461 Porsche 911s were stolen, for a horrendous rate of 19.8 cars stolen per thousand sold. In 1996 (with all immobilizer cars) the theft rate dropped to 19 thefts out of a total production of 7456, for a theft rate of only 2.5 cars stolen per thousand. The website for this data is found at <a href="http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/theft/theft96.cfm" target="_blank">1996 theft data</a> . If you want data for any other year, just replace the "1996" in the web address with the year of your choice.
We may all get annoyed by the immobilizer at times, but it appears to work - VERY well.

So if I understand you, we should never leave the keys in the ingition?
The Honda accord is near the top of the list for most stolen cars. I think P-cars at 136th is pretty good.
Do you have the stats for 95-98 993 with the Bloc system?

C4s,
I never take the the keys....I just leave them in the car! remember I am strange!
Back to Henry ? Only way I know to "rid" yourself of imbolizer, is to reprogram ecu chip!, then you can spend mo money on an alarm! that will do half the job! BUt you will get some more Perfomance?....
edit...If I were in a big city like Chicago....I would take my keys

I thought that not all the 993s have the Imomobilzer...or i am wrong...my car is 1995..and i don't see any signs of Imomobilzer's presence. How does it look or smell. How can I determinate if it is installed on my car?
Thanks!
Thanks!

There does seem to be a significant difference between MY94 and MY95 and later cars. The later cars have an immobiliser warning light in the clock just above the fan belt monitor light when the immobiliser is activated this warning light comes on.
The earlier cars do not have this warning light but are still fitted with Drive Block ( I cannot say for certain that very early cars are thus equipped ) my own car whilst originally registered in June 95 was built mid 94 and is fitted with Drive Block it even has the stickers in the rear side windows. It does not have the warning light in the clock. An easy check is to put the key in the ignition start the engine and then turn it off, remove the key, wait for more than 90 seconds then try to restart the car, if the car is fitted with Drive Block the ignition will have been immobilised and you will have to deactivate it with the remote in order to start the car.
If you do not have the remote either the car does not have Drive Block or the system has been deactivated.
The other issue is how to override the alarm system with the 4 digit code if you do not have the warning light in the clock. I have the code for my car but the instuctions indicate the use of the warning light in the clock in the override procedure.
My original handbook has a seperate supplement to do with the alarm WKD 993 511 94 2/94 which I am sure explains it but it is in German and I have been unable to decipher it. Any German speakers out there or does anyone know the procedure without having the warning light.
Any further info would be much appreciated.

Henry - good question. I am looking for a vibration sensing alarm when the car is left unprotected for any length of time. The immobilizer is fine for anti-theft but not a deterrent to vandalism.
Anyone lose mirrors lately?
I had an incident last fall that ended up costing @$6K.

I've been pretty happy with the Viper alarm system in my 4Runner. The model I have is fairly adjustable, too. Circuit City has 'em.
I have a late production '95 with the immobilizer and the rear window third brake light. It's really no big deal to hit the remote if it doesn't start. I will say that the recoding procedure seems more complicated than retasking a satellite.

So what do the blinking LEDs in the door panels of my '95, w/o remote mean? I tested the alarm by leaving the windows open, locking the car with the key, and opened the door from the inside. Result was honking horn and dead ignition. Is this "Drive Block?"

Edward,
For how long the car has been (will be) horning after you unlocked the door? And how did you stoped it? By the way what "actions" would activate it? I am always afraid of such situtuation. Some car alarms would be activated caused by slight car body shake or lound noise. I noticed I could wash whole car (even wax it with power buffer) and it will not activate alarm system (while it is ON..by mean that the doors are locked and the door LEDs are blinking).

Sputnik,
Once I opened the door from the inside door pull, the horn started honking, but I didn't let it honk for more than 15 seconds or so. I then closed the door and put the key into the door lock and as soon as I turned to lock then unlock it, the horn ceased.
I always assumed that I had the "Drive Block" system since I didn't have the "Immobilizer" remote, but never bothered to ask anyone in the two years I've had the car. Besides, it DID kill the ignition switch. Is it safe to assume this is Drive Block at work?
