Post I got it ! But... (need 17" wheel)

I picked up my 97 993 c2S. 16k miles. Passed a good mechanical inspection but not the best paint inspection. I had 2 guys look at it. One from the dealer, one from a referral (friend). The dealer saw nothing. My other guy raised the eyebrow. Looks like two fenders had been painted. You can feel the seam along the quarter panel under the deck lid and the trunk. Good thing is we had it up on the lift and nobody could find a scratch or bend underneath. The car is straight and shows 0 signs of smashed. However, the new paint on the fenders will be the question...I negotiated the price lower to the dealer and got the car low. I love it. I feel like she'll perform great in the city and if she gets a little damage I wont freak out! Initial imperfection shock is over. I will be posting often. I need your help to get her up to par because I like going to car shows. I have a couple of immediate issues I need to resolve.

1.) I need a Wheel. 17" OEM cup style for front size = _________? Any one have a spare? Mine is slighly bent. We noticed it at Tire Rack when i went there (in south bend, IN) to get re-balanced + two new rears (part of my deal. Believe it or not....the Owner of tire rack helped put on the tires (he's 75).

2.) The brakes are squeaking a bit.

3.) My rear defrost pull out switch is not staying pulled out.....????

All else is absolutely awesome.. Thanks Dean

1) Try Ernie's Alloys; 305/687-0028. Front stock should be 7X16 - optional is 7X17; pull a wheel and look at the inside, lazybones. You should see a wheel number also; gives you ammunition to ask Ernie for proper one.
I've also seen shops that can straighten alloy wheels. Did you ask Tire Rack??????

2) "a bit"??? Normal in a lot of circumstances. For the heck of it, try:
a) make sure OE pads are installed; pull one and see if they say "TEXTAR" on them.
b) Might also try Metalmasters pads

3) Normal; it pops back into normal position. If the rear window is getting defrosted, don't worry.

I had a less than stellar experience with Ernie's. I would recommend Wheel Enhancement instead, they advertise in Pano and Excellence. You can find them online, too. Theys were great when I bent a rim on my Boxster.

All the Cup rims are 17" btw.

Wheel Enhancement can fix you up with a 17 X 8" wheels for the front...I believe they were originally snow tire wheels. Now all you have to do is figure out how to get a 18" X 17 rear wheels(s).

Ray, thanks for your response. That defrost pull switch does'nt stay out at all... I can pull it out but it wont hold in position. It just pops back in instantly.. Is that normal...

I'll check the brake pads (not that i know what I'm doing, maybe a mechanic). Could the squeak be from the slight bent rim? I dont feel any vibration on the steering, even at 80mph. Is it bad to drive on it?

Also, got a little corrosion in the driver side rear interior window rubber, corner. When i compared other cars they had the same deal. Whats that. can I clean it with something.

Weather strip by door is torn... Easy to change?

Do i need special jack stands to hold the car off the floor?

I was just up on ebay, I thought I saw at least one 17" wheel for sale for a 993. Not sure of the specifics tho.

Deano,
Don't worry...the defrost **** you described it's normal like that as well as the squeaking break pads...

Just enjoy your new ride and perhaps some pics?

Best Regards,

PK

>>> Yes, that's normal.

>>>Nope

Do i need special jack stands to hold the car off the floor?

>>> Nope. You need a floor jack that's low enough to fit under the car at the rear jack point. Check your manual for where that is if you're not sure.

And if you don't know the diameter of your wheels, look at the sidewall of your tires! They'll say something like '205/50-17'. The 17 is the diameter.

And I'd encourage you to go to a mechanic for any brake work...

My understanding is that Tips in particular tend to have squeeky brakes more so than 6 speeds. The squeek is from glazing - the best way to get rid of it is to "brake" it off. Take it up to speed and then hit the brakes hard, this "burns" of the glaze and eliminates the squeek - until it starts to squeek again. <img src="graemlins/bigok.gif" border="0" alt="[thumbsup]" />

Looks like you got most of your questions answered; little to add.

The squealing varies from car to car, even with same pads. I've got stock pads, don't have it or it's very minor (occasional second or so very light squeak right at end of stop). Others have it to an 'annoying' degree. This might be different tolerance limits in different people. Don't know what you mean by 'squeaking a bit', but if it's only a light squeak for a second or so at the tail end of a stop, I wouldn't worry about it - it doesn't affect performance. If toll takers on the parkway are jumping back in fright, then might look into things deeper.
