Question Air through the door handle

Maybe this has been discussed before - if so sorry.

I like to ride around in the cold weather with the sunroof open and the heat on. It give me a little feeling of being out in the elements.

Unfortunately, when I have the sunroof open and the windows closed, I get a massive amount of cold fresh wind blowing in through the door handle. It was 35 the other day, and that's enough to freeze my leg. Has anyone else had and solved this problem? I haven't yet pulled the door off, but I'm thinking some creative insulation might take care of the problem.

Thoughts?

Here you go:

Door Panel - Air Leak

Binder-Service Technical Bulletins

Air Leak at the Door Panel

Vehicle Type:
911 Carrera (964 and 993)
911 Turbo (964 and 993)

Model Year:
As of Model Year 1989

Concern:
Air drafts in the area of the inner door opener.

Modification:
As of April 1, 1997 from VIN: 99 1VS322950

From the above-mentioned VIN a felt piece is installed in the inner door opener (Figure 1). This significantly reduces air drafts from the area of the inner door opener. The felt piece may be installed in earlier vehicles.

Repairs:
Installation of felt piece.

- Disconnect the door opener rod, inner door cover and pull handle.

- Lay felt piece onto the inside of the inner door opener, and mark with a pen or suitable marker (Figure 1).

Important : The pointed part of the felt piece must point forward in the driving direction.

- Apply glue on the marked area of the inner door panel and install the felt piece.

- Reinstall the pull handle, inner door cover, and the door opener rod.

Important : Avoid damaging the felt piece by carefully pushing the door opener rod through the slot in the felt (Figure 1, arrow).

Parts:
993 555 715 00 Felt

Kim, you da man! When I bought my car, I noticed this nasty draft when the sunroof was open but not when it was closed. Thanks for the update.

Zowie, SB! That was only 12 minutes to get a detailed and useful description of how to fix the problem.

You are 'da man' - Many thanks.

Nicely done, Kim - the TSB man!

Mike, forgive me for asking, but why do you call yourself "strange gobbler". I can't get my head around that nickname.

Anir-

I'm a Virginia Tech fan, and maybe a little off-center. For those of you that don't know, VT is "Home of the Fighting Gobblers"...

Anyway, it's usually impossible to find a unique name with 'Mike' in it, so strangegobbler works.

Go Hokies! (the other more common nickname)

so is that like there's a TSB on it and I can just take it up to a Porsche dealer and they will take care of it no charge?

Mike,

Thanks for the explanation. Sort of like us Wildcat fans "bleeding blue".

Sorry to be nosy.

Hi Mike,

Sorry to pry but are you , and your fellow football fans, aware of the sexual connotation of your name? Maybe it's just a British thing?

Before you ask, I was called Captain Cavemen at school because I shared a terrible temper with my cartoon namesake.

Cheers,

David

My wife's 97 Boxster has the same problem. It seems like the fix would be similar, yes?

Default Air through door handle

Can anyone help me with this problem. Air comes in through the drivers door handle but only when the sunroof is open. I have taken off the door panel and can't see anything wrong, ripped or missing.

I have found a related link but the answer seems to be missing?

https://rennlist.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14486

What was the answer and why can't I see it????

Kim - I too would like to see the picture as I have the same problem.

strangegobbler - I am also a Hokie fan - Class of '93, back when winning a couple football games in the entire season was a bonus. My last year there was the first time we beat UVA in a really long time and their first appearance in a bowl from their break.

Go Hokies!

Anybody actually done this tsb? I'm wondering if the door panel needs to be removed as the terms used are a bit ambiguous.

Thanks.
