Post Anyone familiar with Rennwerks Wine Country Motorsports in Mountain View, CA?

Anyone familiar with this place in Mountain View, CA? Saw their page online and saw they had 3 different stages of performance upgrades. I was wondering if these guys can reprogram a 1996 993 DME. Here is the link, and I have no affiliation with them just want to know if people know about them and what their comments are:

Art - When it comes to things as complicated as DME programming where there is the potential for things to go badly wrong, I wouldn't cut any corners. I think the general consensus is that Steve at Rennsports is the guy to go to.

I think with our cars, depending on the mod sometimes you go for "cheap" and sometimes you go for "value", which includes not only the price of the product but also the aftersale support and pre/post sale customer service. I've exchanged a few emails with Steve in the past and while I am not yet a customer, I know who I'll go to once I take the plunge and upgrade my DME.

My $0.02. <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" />

Dave - Steve is a great guy (I agree with you on that), but I was really curious if people have used this place before as it is near where I live in the Bay Area. Also these guys race Porsches as well and seem to have years of experience. I am not going for the cheap solution at all. I agree with you when it does come to our cars, sometimes only the best will do. However what I am interested in knowing if someone has used this before or have used their shop for any other sales/service. From the rest of their website, they seem to be knowledgeable and seem to have equipment to set up the car for either street or track use.

So if anyone has used this shop before or is familiar with them, please comment on them and I will probably give these guys a call/visit them and see what kind of operation they run.

The Rennwerks information indicates that the chip software is by Autothority. When I had my 1990 C4, Autothority was one of the major players in that market - I had one of their chips in my car.

They seem to have fallen below the radar screen lately, but I don't know what that means. If its the same people, I don't think they are inexperienced but I don't know if they're good or not.

I went there do get some work done, and will not go back. I too live on the Peninsula, and thought since they were close I'd give them a try. Mistake. I later found some other poor remarks in the archives here.

I put on the PSS9s and needed an alignment and a corner balance. After the first day the car was there, they called to tell me that their super duper alignment machine that is advertised prominently on their website does not have the option to set the Kinematic toe. I asked if they had ever done a 993 before. He said they had, but just eyeballed this adjustment in the past. He did say he was going to order the part. So told them to align anyway and then they would need to finish it when they get this part for their rack.

Day 2 I get a call around noon. They loaned out their corner scales to someone and they can't get hold of him to bring them back so they can do my car. They said 'we don't really get many cars that we need to corner balance'. This tells me this is NOT the shop that I want working on my car. Since this was required before doing the alignment, they wound up holding onto my car for 2 days and doing nothing. In hindsight, it is probably better that way.

i've heard very mixed things from Rennwerks as well. My friend took his car there for a corner balance and it just pulled after the alignment. They told him it was normal. he took it to reitmeyer and when he was done with it - the car drove straight as an arrow. Also other minor things like when taking wheels off & on - they put the hub cap pointed the wrong way and the locking lug was in the incorrect place (should be opposite the valve stem). While this stuff is minor - to me it shows a lack of attention to detail.

I will add that their shop is a showcase shop - it is sparkling clean and appears well equipped. but nonetheless i'm going to pass on it.

cheers,
boris

i don't know but i usually consult reitmeyer in downtown Los Altos for my porsche needs. He's a great person to come with an oustanding knowledge about porsche cars and at the same time, providing reliable service

Hi Art,

I tried to give them my business on several different occassions for my 964. After numerous unreturned phone calls and emails, decided to spend my money elsewhere. Just too many shop options available, and didn't like how the relationship was starting.

how many years have they been in business? if they've been in business for over 5 years i'd say they've been doing fairly well to able to survive that long.

I just had my 996 aligned at Rennwerks. I was very happy with my experience. They took the time to ask me how I used the car (e.g., street only or some track events), rather than just dialing in the standard street alignment. The car now handles better than ever. I would definitely go back. By the way, I noticed these guys finished 3rd overall at the 24 Hours of Daytona, so they must know something about these cars.

Mountain View = Wine Country. I think not! If their name is phony, what else is?

You could also post this question in the Turbo forums. I know of at least one guy with a 930 that's used them. Their shop, as it exists now, is fairly new. But some of their mechanics have been at some other well-established shops in the area for awhile.

Wine Country Motorsports is based at Sear's Point in Sonoma, close enough to warrant the name. They just have a showroom in Rennwerks.
