Help Needed to Identify Part
After 18 years of ownership, I notice a drop of oil which I believe is coming from one of the bolts circled in the following photo. Can someone identify what the bolts are attached to. I want to tighten them but don't what they are connecting, or their torque spec. It is next to the driver's side timing cover. Thanks in advance.

That's the chain case, it's a metal seal with rubber seal attached to it. It cannot be replaced without a fair amount of work. It's more likely it's leaking from above on the chain case cover and running down it. The chain case cover seal can be replaced if needed. It's usually one of the rubber seals under the domed washer. Id clean the area thoroughly to be certain where the oil is actually coming from before doing anything further.

Thank you, I will follow your recommendation and jack the car up and clean the area next weekend.

Isn't your leak coming from higher up? So the domed rubber seals as JHG suggested? But the source may well be from higher-up again.

Hi GD,
Be aware the engine, due to the number of seals, will leak to some extent on most 993. My view is if it is not dripping on the exhaust system and smelling or dripping on the floor and it bothers you I would not try to adress it. Folks can spend a lot of money chasing leaks. Also if you find a particualr leak disturbing I would avoid trying to seal up any and all leaks, only the materieal ones, Also if a valve cover is leaking avoid the temptaion to replace all the valve cover seals because the main reason a seal is leaking is because it was not properly seated the last time it was replaced. One that is not leaking should not develop a leak going forward.
