Front Windshield replacement
Can anyone recommend a good glass shop in the EASTBay or SouthBay in Northern California? And would you recommend a mobile repair place?
Got hit this morning on the way to work by a rock shot by a 18Wheeler.
Thanks,
Scott

Scott, I would recommend Safelite. They are a chain. Had the windshield replaced on my 993 C4S. They used OEM Sigla glass. I had heard that insurance companies will pay for windshield replacement and will waive the deductible but I cannot verify that.
Go online and look up Safelite. Also ask them if any of their installers knows Porsche's and specifically 993s. Make sure that person does your windows. Get new seals as well.

Scott,
There is a Safelite location in SF. I only spoke to one guy who worked there, he appeared to be the main installer. I don't know if there are many others who work in the shop, could have been a slow day. But when I asked him about whether he had experience installing front windshields on Porsches, specifically 993s, he responded with, "what do you think?" I took that as a no. Try giving them a call (415) 431-4117_They're located on 4th St. btwn Brannan and Townsend. Good luck, let me know how it goes. I've been wanting to replace my windshield after getting a good 1" slit from a rock, plus all the pitting I have.

Thanks Nelson,
I'll let you know what happens I did call them last night at 11:45pm and the Customer Service Rep said that there systems are being updated and she couldn't get me a price. So someone is suppose to call me today sometime.
I told her the year(97), make(porsche) and model(993) but nothing came up except 911SC, Carrera, and Targa. So I was kind of hesitant there when nothing came up correctly. So we'll see if they really know their stuff when I talk to the installer today sometime between 8am and 9pm.
Boris, I'll see if they have some type of bulk pricing.
Thanks,
Scott

Just had my windwhield replaced at a Safelite place. I had scheduled it as a mobile replacement (i.e. in the driveway at home), but they called back and said the installer felt it was best to do 'more involved' windshield jobs like Porsches at the shop. It was ready about 5 hours after I dropped it off.
The windshiled looks just like the origiinal, though I'm pretty sure they didn't use OEM glass. Cost was $475 total. They appear to have done a good job, I haven't come across any problems.
Interestingly, it would have been an extra $300 to put in non-tinted glass (the original glass was tinted).

I just got a call back from safelite. They quoted me $461.48 plus CA tx so it's around $496.25 installed. I have it scheduled for next week and I can cancel anytime. I told them I wanted to get pricing for OEM glass (Sigla) so they said that was fine, unfortunately they won't be able to install it because they can't warranty it. So I'll have to check some other glass shops in the Bay Area. Any Suggestions?

Why do you want oem glass? I had a Safelite windshield replacement 14 months ago (about $400). From DEs & perhaps some mlincoln disapproved driving I've picked up a few small stone chips, but nothing like the sandblasting I experienced w/the softer oem glass.
Dan,
Good point. So from your experience the Safelite glass seems to be a better product? It looks like there's a number of folks that have gone with Safelite glass.
So what is mlincoln disapproved driving?.....nevermind don't go there. I don't want to see 7K plus hits on the counter.

Suggestion - When I had my replaced (although it was a cab) the technician suggested that I wait 24 hours before driving to make sure that the adhesive sets tight. This will reduce the likelihood of having any cowl shake. The actually came back to my house on day 2 to inspect the install and that's when they put the molding on.
