Haven't put on enough miles to find out. But I remember hearing around 10k miles not unusual.

Hi Cactus,
My understanding is the toe-in on the rear is the basis of the accelerated tire wear. The greater toe in, the better the car tracks but the tires are used up more quickly. I would get an alignment at a shop that knows how to align a 993 to the factory settings with its kinematic rear-toe setting. This may reduce the rate of wear on the rears.
My experience is the rear tires last from 1/4 to 1/2 as long as the front tires.
Summer performance tires generally have a very low UTOG rating of typically 150, all season tires have a UTOG rating of 400 to 500.
In general terms for each numerically doubling of the UTOG rating the tires last twice as long. This is one of the reasons why I stopped using performance tires years ago. I give up a little grip on dry pavement in doing this but I do not find it to be a problem on my year round street driven daily driver 993.

Andy

I have 10K on my rears at this time and can see the wear strips but think that I can get by for the rest of this summer, no hard driving is in the near future. I learned the hard way that rear tires are not to be pushed hard at the edge of their service life, had a spin on some twisties at speed that got my attention and made me a believer in good fresh rubber. I am happy with 10K on the rears, tires to me are the price of admission for safe driving.

Hey Cactus,

Andy beat me to it: mostly about your tire choice, but that assumes your alignment is right --that is, right for what you want to accomplish. Long ago when I had tracked the 993 (though my daily driver), I had it aligned fairly aggressively and paid the price on my daily commute with darty feel and tire wear. When I had to have A-arm bushes replaced, I went back to a "street" alignment that was a bit more "sporty" than stock but far less than what I had for the track and what a difference!

That said, if you were satisfied with 6500k miles on your last set, then it's your tire choice. Fwiw, I use Conti ExtremeContact (a "summer" tire that still has decent wear rating) and easily get over 13/14k miles on rears, double that on fronts, and still get plenty of grip and good feel for spirited canyon runs. On my second set of fronts (which is maybe my third set of rears now?) and I love these Contis for street use ...again, fwiw.

I have a fairly aggressive alignment on my car and run the conti dws06 tires. With the unpredictability of Denver area weather, I don't want to get stuck in the mountains on a summer tire. They usually last for about 6-7k

I have 12K now on my ExtremeContact summer tires. About to put on Michelin PS2s. I expect to get less than that on the PS2s...

10K is about all i've ever got out of the rears. 20K for the fronts. I have a fairly aggressive alignment.

On my 993 with 17 inch Cup 2s = 8-10K on the rears using Dunlop SP8000 (OEM), Sumitomo 2s, Continental Extreme Contact and BF Goodrich Sport Tac Comp 2 performance tires......I align the car every other set......

Fronts last twice as long, about 20K plus...........use 36/36 inflation numbers always........surprised how good the BF Goodrich have been......least expensive so far.......was going to try Bridgestone, Hankook or Yokohama next....if they have stock sizes for 17s......have Michelin on my other cars...probably the best riding and least noisy......

I'm sad to say that my tires get replaced due to age long before wear causes it... BUT my X5M daily more than makes up for that!

I just put new Conti ExtremeContacts on my 993 (replacing some really old Kumho Ecsta's), after also putting them on my Boxster last fall and really liking them. So far, the Conti's have been great

Well the S04 was replaced with the Potenza Sport but still crazy only 4000 miles. They wore very evenly as well.

Also I did two road trips to the mountains last year which was about 1600 miles total but 95% was in the rain. Maybe they wear more in the wet
