There are two switches that make contact with the header on the windshield. Are these switches closing? If they don't, the motors will not lock. They can get out of alignment. Take a piece of cardboard and slide into the header where the switches are with the top in the closed position. If you hear a click, the the switches were not closed. Slide the cardboard in and operate the top, see if the motors lock now.

Thanks for the information, I went out and slid the piece of cardboard in and I still hear a click when trying to engage the top. I really think it has to do with the alignment but the top seems to be completely in the down position in that it is impossible to slide the cardboard in and push the switches in without lifting the top a little to reach it. Any other suggestions , I really appreciate your help and assitance
thanks

I'm also having problems with my top.
My top does close but at then very end I hear a very loud clicking sound from the locking motors. The warning light for my top stays on. Has anyone else had this problem and was it for sure the motors being burnt out, or was it a mis-alignment problem. Given the cost of replacing the motors I haven't fixed the problem but if there is anything else I could try I'd sure like to know about it.
Thanks in advance

Sorry bout bad description, the top is laying flat on the assembly and really does not have room to slip in carboard. I do see the two swtiches I think you are referring to but only when I manually lift the top, they appear to be pushed in fully, I am convinced it is an aligment issues in that I can hear a click and the last few times it went down it made an unusual noise in closing.
My Dealer contact is out till next week so I will probably bring it in there then, thanks again for help any other ideas are readilly tried, really love the car and this is the first problem I have encountered since buying 2 years ago
Thanks for the help,
regards

My top stopped in the middle and the motors or the latches on the top of the windscreen would do nothing. CHECK YOUR FUSE. I think it is fuse nos. 13 (not really sure). That sorted my problem. If the top is stuck and you cant manually move it then disengage the top from the motor. There are two plastic cups on either side of the rear seat. Loosen the bolts inside with the wheel nut remover. This would disengage the top from the motor.

Zumbera,
No it is not the fuse, checked that and it looks good.
Let me describe what happens , the roof looks to be completely up and ready to be secured in the top by both sides being locked down, when engaging the button it will make the sound as if it is gonna lock it in but nothing happens, I have tried to pull down to be sure that it is secure and that does not change anything.
after trying 6 to 8 times and hearing the same noice when trying again it will only click , as if it was overloaded. Leaving the car sit and trying again later will result in the orignal noise.
others have mentioned that the switches are not engaged, however the top is so far down in place that there is not room to put a piece of card in, to push in the switch, it seems to be that it is place but somehow out of alignment.
i feel certain, it is not the fuse, not a burned out motor any help further suggestions would really be appreciated, will not drive car in this condition and missing great days, about to bring it into the dealer and was hoping to avoid,
thanks to all for any more suggestions
regards

Hi there,
This happened to me once last fall. What I did was start to manually lock the top by placing a screwdriver (flat I think) into the holes at the top and turning clockwise. If you keep going, you can lock the top manually as per owners manual. However I found that a few turns is all it took and when I pushed the button it locked. The top has worked normally since.
May be worth a try.
Ps. My moronic dealer told me they cannot suggest anything over the phone and for me to drive it in. I should have done a high speed pass and held him responsible for a new top.

GOOD NEWS CAB TOP Now working !!!!
Dealer said the micro switch needed adjustment , so they adjusted it and lubed the moving pieces. Best part, total bill was only $ 35.72.
I use Beechmont Porsche in Cincinnati and find them extremely reliable and reasonable. David Proffit is the service manager and is truly exceptional !!!!
thanks to all for suggestions over past few weeks

Apparently a common problem with the '95 tops that was later fixed with a different rear motor. I had the same problem with the same solution. The Micro Switches in the rear motor sends a message to the switches in the front motors.
Also, once had to pull down the remaining 1/4 inch to engage the front locking motors. Works fine ever since.

I visited my Porsche mechanic (Rene Prepet at Rensport in Framingham, MA) a while back to show him my 993 cab I had bought on ebay. I recall him mentioning that there are one (two?) electric motors in the visor portion of the cabriolet roof top (the part that engages the windshield) and he said to "use the top" often as these motors can "freeze up over time" if unused. He said they were rather expensive to replace. So if your cab sits for a bit (especially in damp conditions or maybeover the winter), it might be worthwhile to exercise the top from time to time. I noticed the cars user manual however daid not to operate the top below freezing (probably to avoid cracking the back window).
