It’s been an interesting first week of ownership. The parking brake cables were seized so the car spent 4 days in the air while I tried a bunch of methods to release them. Ultimately I opted to buy new ones as well as new parking brake shoes. Now I can tell you everything there is to know about the parking brake system in these cars. Everything!
While the car was stationary I fixed the CCU (it wasn’t turning on), removed the ghastly rear wiper, installed new deck lid shocks, new rear center reflector, new wipers, new wide oval tips, new spoiler wall and I’m sure I’m forgetting other things… I have a 996 3-spoke steering wheel waiting as well.
After all the work was completed I went to have the car smogged today. I figured that in case the battery had been disconnected prior to delivery, 300 miles of me driving it would set the readiness codes. The good news is that it passed the strict CA sniffer test. With 145K original miles on it!! But sadly the CAT and EVAP had not been set and it failed... I’ve owned two 1996 993s and this is my third. I’ve never had a readiness code issue until today. Guess I’ll be following the specific driving methods over the next few days…

Went for that special OBD2 drive yesterday armed with printed instructions, a stop watch and my scan tool.
Puttering around on the freeway at 50 mph is no fun, even on a Sunday morning… but after an hour of following instructions to the T all 8 monitors were set and this morning I got my smog check done and the car registered.
Then I dropped it off at the body shop for some windshield cowl rust repair as well as a few other things. Probably won’t be ready for the Lit Meet week, but oh well…

Where are you getting the windshield repair done? My 993 windshield is pretty beat and would like to replace it but have read up on how important it is to get someone who knows 993s to do this. I'm up in the 805 be willing to bring it to LA area for the right shop.

Way to power down the slippery slope. Fast forwards to perfection. I guess the 2nd time around is easier.

I take a measure of satisfaction maintaining my 130k C4S…not for the next owner, who will ideally be my daughter, but for me. I easily suspect that the OP likewise, takes enormous satisfaction from bringing this well loved, and appreciated example up a notch.
