Maybe... I don't have it in front of me, but I believe the workshop manual (and I know the Bentley book) say to take the pulley off the pump, not off the camshaft.

Yes, it states take top pulley off. Just thought if lower pulley was easier to remove....

Do NOT take off the lower pulley - given its connected to the camshaft, how are you expecting to hold the camshaft still to torque the pulley back on? The other reason is if you lock the engine crankshaft down (say leave it in gear), and that big bolt is a bit tight, you can actually put enough torque through the camshaft to loosen the camshaft chain sprocket nut - then you are in bigger trouble!

**forgot to mention - this can also cause a slip in your timing because you might move the camshaft relative to the cam sprocket - not good.

Replacing the pump is not that big of a deal, but it's all done at the pump level - you will be removing the pump pulley. Note how it's designed to be taken off without a lot of drama.

Cheers,

Mike

^^^This!!!! As I started to think about how I would attack this, I ruled out messing with the lower pulley for the very reasons Mike mentioned.

+1. Thanks to RoDeO_993's post, I determined what the problem was, cut the belt and drove my 964 home from vacation instead of towing it. I'm finally ready to replace the belt and found this thread again, so I thought I'd cross post mine:
