Default So Glad I am out of the Porsche scene

Glad I bought a MB SL55, and am getting rid of my Porsche. 98 993S, no car more beautiful, nor more unpredictable. After spending 4000 at my personal mechanic for new clutch, flywheel, pads, and rotors, Check engine light on. Took to Pacific Porsche in Socal and they had it for 5 weeks, and replaced the flywheel and clutch, and said it is fine, and seven miles out of their driveway, guess what, yes, engine light. I have had it, after 25 years of Porsche!! Image, yeah, but crappy, yeah. 45K miles, what BS, and Porsche, the end-all sports car guys have no clue!! 4000 at mechanics and 2400 more at the Porsche dealer, but I stopped the check immediately. The Mercedes is a dream, compared to that piece of doodie. As I said, gorgeous, but so is the MB, and goooobye. Larry

sounds like the mechanics had their way with you.
4k for a clutch/flywheel and brakes?????
then you had another dealer install another clutch/flywheel????

I hate to break this to you... but MB is gone downhill over the years. My wife's car (C32 AMG) has been to the dealer 14 times, and they've replaced a dozen sensors, wirign harness, etc and the problems remain. I am not alone: http://www.mercedes-benz-usa.com/

If you wanted a problem free car from a company with excellent service, you should have picked up a Lexus.

Default Sorry it took you 25 years ...

to find out how crappy Porsches are. My next car will be a Mercedes too, in about the year 2030 when my 993 is worn out.

I'm on my 3rd 911 and all of them have been fantastic cars. Perhaps the car was a little too sharp for you as you have replaced it with a cruiser?

Mercedes is second to last(behind Land Rover), in J.P. Power. Now, what was that about "nor more unpredictable"?

Am I the only one that finds Mercedes overwhelmingly monotonous? They remind of the old Cadillacs. The hi-po models are all slushboxes, they all look the same, the interior lacks character, and the steering has no feel. My dad is looking at CL55's to replace his 996 and I told him I would shoot 'em if he pulled a move like that. He'd better get a 997... too bad he won't buy a 993TT.

I'll retract the steering statement; I haven't driven any of the hi-performance models. My grandmother's old and new S-class feel like a land yacht though (although the new one feels far superior).

Bad Luck Larry... I've had 17 Porsches over the last 34 years and haven't spent $5K on repairs... not counting scheduled maintenance... Guess I'm just lucky, huh?

What does a check engine light have to do with brake pads and clutch?!!!
Sorry to break this to you even if you are a Rennlist member before you spend useless money you should have consulted this board first. I somehow thing that you would not have paid for the same job twice for no reason and you would still be driving your S
Good luck to you.

Larry, sorry to hear your disappointment. The $4K for new clutch, flywheel, pads, and rotors is not out of line, but I can understand the additional $2400 and CEL putting you over the top. The SL55 is a fine car, but long term I suspect much more complex than a 993. The little niggly things going wrong would make a good warranty worth a lot. We will welcome you back if you change your mind.

Sorry to hear about your woes, Larry. Personally, I wouldn't take my Porsche to any dealer, especially in SoCal where there are so many terrific Porsche shops. My neighbor took his C4S into the same Porsche dealer as you and his car sat there for about the same amount of period. They had difficultly correctly diagnosing his problem and he picked up his car without any improvement. Anyway, I hope your Benz works out for you.

Looks as though maybe more research on your part about your 993's issues would have saved you money and headache's....

Maybe I am taking your post wrong, but it seems as though you are bent at all of us Porsche nuts instead of the incompetant dealer. Seems you went about your mechanical troubles the wrong way. Anyone would be pissed and fed-up, but in this type of situation, logical thinking would have me back at the first dealer speaking with management..

As far as Mercedes goes, the last quality product they have offered was 10 years ago.. At least this way, you'll be able to blend-in with everyone else on the road with their Chryslers
