What is this leak?
I know everyone likes a challenge. Noticed my 993 C2 leaking some fluid from around the front near the driver side. The car has relatively new Koni shocks (circa 2015). The fluid seems colorless. Im thinking maybe steering rack? I placed cardboard underneath to catch it…see pic below of cardboard pulled straight out a bit.
either way I’ll be taking it in to the shop…but would help to have some ideas before I go….
thanks guys!

I have a small leak in my steering rack too. So does my friend's 964. Seems to be typical as these cars approach 30 years of age.
For now I just add a small amount of power steering fluid there once a month but eventually I have to fix it. Maybe. My leak hasn't gotten any worse in a year.

Hi Andrew,
Steering rack, Notes:
Ask the rebuilder to return the rebuilt rack made from your core, note the serial number, not from his stock of cores. A rack freshly taken out of service such as the one from your car should likely just need soft parts switched out. One built from a salvage rack can result in a rebuild job with a much shorter service life because it may be made from a damaged rack or have welds done on its hard parts to fill corrosion pitting from sitting around on a salvage car. There are very few good 993 rack cores floating around as the rack for the 993 is a model-unique configuration, not too many 993s were built and those built are mostly still on the road.

Thanks for all the input as usual guys! Andy I will definitely see if my shop can just order the rebuild parts and take care of it rather then just ship it out for rebuild. I won’t have them source a rebuilt one. I think I saw a YouTube video in fact by Car Wizard (of Hoovies garage fame) in which he rebuilds a steering rack…doesn’t look too complicated!

The reason for sending your rack out to have it rebuilt and returned is that a shop specializing in rebuilding ZF racks also pressure tests it for leaks before returning it to you. Your local shop can probably only test it by putting it back on your car where a small leak won't be found until later. Most of the labor is taking it out and putting it back in so a redo will be expensive. This is why sending it out to a specilist is probably a better option for a durable rebuild.

Hi,
Since this is about leaks, I need your knowledge to figure out this oily leak.
These plastic parts are oily wet.
Please let me know
1. the source of this oil
2. Is it normal
3. What is a remedy to stop the leak( I hope ithis not an engine split)

See the following thread for the varioram leak:
https://rennlist.com/forums/993-foru...-manifold.html
in addition to replacing the gasket identified in the thread, it is a good idea to replace the two seals in the flapper shaft - see post .#30 in the thread for detail

Andy—what is the appropriate labor time for the shop to replace the rack? My only reference is from the rennthusiest YouTube channel….he did his in 2021 and with a $700 rebuild price his fix came out to 2k
