Hi, so I'm looking at some great 993 Carrera's with the intention of buying a keeper. I've been looking high and far for over a year.
One has caught my eye and is a mostly original Carrera with 60K odd miles and in excellent condition. The asking price is near market high for mileage and condition.
The previous owner made some OEM+ alterations, namely Gemballa sports exhaust, Turbo rear deck, K&N air filter, 3 spoke Boxster steering wheel & Turbo front air ducts.
On the whole these are in my opinion tasteful alterations & enhance the original look.
The original Porsche parts have not been kept.
Should I be concerned over the absence of these original parts?
Although I like the OEM+ bits, if I do sell later would the value be affected if it couldn't be returned to factory stock?

All those bits are easy enough to swap out back to factory spec, if its a nice car go for it!

 

It's tough to find the right 993 - took me almost 2 years as well. The fact that by asking this question, I think you're also answering it Future buyers will probably have the same concerns.

It will definitely narrow the resale market, but then again, once I finally bought mine, I stopped worrying about resale - don't plan on doing it.

But it sounds like most of those mods could be reversed - for enough money! I think there should be deduct from "market high" because of that. But I imagine the seller thinks those things are all value add to the "right buyer." Which goes back the the narrower market comment.

Yeah all of that stuff is pretty desirable and the "Stock" parts are easy to find- with maybe the deck lid/ spoiler being the most expensive and hardest to find. But I don't think you'll have any issues with finding a buyer for a car like that. I certainly wouldn't base my purchase on "future" buyers- get the car you want to enjoy and go from there.

 

"OEM+" sounds like a marketing term for something that isn't - a K&N filter and a Gemballa exhaust are aftermarket pieces. Some people like Boxster steering wheels, some do not. Some think a turbo tail on a 993 looks unbalanced (esp if it is a NB) or is unoriginal - some folks like it. If these pieces have you questioning the price then they would have others questioning the price as well. That being said - the thing is a car meant to be enjoyed .... do what you want with it and change it as you see fit.

 

I figured that would be the pricey part.


I've checked and the WB car retains the console button & wiring for the factory retractable rear wing.
To return to factory would need another engine lid, deck motor, cover, decals and paint?
This one's growing on me...

There's no such thing as a 'Boxster' steering wheel - no idea why so many people look down their noses at anything other than the 4-spoke.

From at least 1997 Porsche offered either their 3- or 4-spoke airbag steering wheels on the 993, 986 and 996. That's a fact.

 

In short, I’ve been looking for a decent WB 993 & think I’ve found one. The car’s got some ‘extras’ that may be considered OEM+, the big one is the rear wing. Fitted early 2000 (could be original Porsche but would need to check) Whilst I could live with it, others may be deterred.
My first preference is for the clean lines of the coupe, however, the model, condition & mileage is pulling me in.
Wanted to know how others would consider these changes from stock and if it could ‘hold back’ the car in the future given the original parts haven’t been kept.

 

Yes - but if the turbo rear deck was supplied via Porsche, it's worth a large amount of dollars. The standard decklid is not uncommon, so if the turbo rear deck is 'Porsche', then you'll make money.

 

Is this easy to check? I imagine there’s a part number somewhere. I’ll enquire with the owner if there’s a place to look.

 

So the current owner isn't the person who put the deck on the car in 2000?

Bear in mind that even if it's not 'Porsche' supplied, if it looks good after 23 years it must be of a high enough quality that you'll probably break even on the swop

I'm sure someone will be along in a minute to tell you where the part numbers are on a turbo rear lid.

20 year current owner bought the car with the ‘bells and whistles’ already there.
I’ll check the validity of the deck when I know what to ask.

 

It was a factory option - so it may have come with it. I see a LOT of C4S with TT wing- I actually like it! And I of course, LOVE Arena Red! LOL Looks like the bumperettes on the front have been deleted too- another popular option.
