Post Michelin Pilot Sport Cup Tire Sizes for 17" Wheels

I'm just about to buy a set of Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires for the coming DE season. I'll be running them on 17x8 ET-52 front and 17x9 ET-55 Rear Stock Cup Wheels. I was planning on buying 225/45-17's for the front wheels and 255/40-17's for the rear wheels.

My car is a 97' 993 lowered to RS ride height, with semi aggressive alignment settings. I'd appreciate input on this setup (size and balance front to rear) from anyone who is running something similar.

TIA

JF

Michelin Pilot Sport Cups only come in OEM sizes so you do not have options. Luckily this is the correct size choice and it will work well.

JC:

Thanks for you reply, what do you think about the 8x17" with the 225/45 at the front instead of the stock 7x17" 205/50?

I used 225/45F and 255/40R for a while, with roughly the same amount of camber F&R. It oversteered for me, badly. When I went to 225/275 F/R I realized what a neutral car was supposed to feel like.

That was with the ROW M030 suspension; I just got back from a weekend on the PSS9 suspension with ROW M030 sways, shocks set to '1' F&R, lowered to RS ride height, RS alignment. 225/275 continued to give me a nice, balanced attitude in the corners.

I'd like to get the Michelin Pilot Sport Cups, but a) they don't make the 275/40 size, and b) I'd hate to lose 20mm F&R by going back to 205/255!

Go up on the Tire Rack Web site. I think you will see that the 8" wheel is optimal for the 225/45/17. and the 9" is well wwithin specs for the 255/40/17.

I have just completed about 17 Heat cycles (20 minute track sessions) on the Michelin Pilot Sport Cups on my narrow body 993. This is about the time I would be replacing my Kumho VictoRacers. I believe I have another 7 or 8 heat cycles left before they go away...that is another weekend at the track. I am getting what appears to be 50% more heat cycles at about a 30% cost increase. I like the math...it appears my costs are going down...wifey will love this.

Robert:

I just read on the Racing/DE Board that the Michelin Pilot Sport Cups in 225/45-17 are very narrow, closer to a 205, possibly too narrow for an 8" wheel?

What tires were you running 225/45 255/40 to cause the oversteer?

BTW I think I sold you the used M030 suspension that was previously on your car a couple of years ago!

Martin:

No more Kuhmo's for me either!

I think the 225/255 sizes are the right choice for 8"/9" wheels. You need to get your hands on a pyrometer to read the tire temps. You want to be running these tires at about 180-220 degrees from the inside to the outside of the tread. If you are not getting them hot you are going to be unhappy with them.

I run the Michelin Pilot Sport Cups on 8Jx17 and 9.5Jx17 in the 225/255 sizes. This was recommended as the proper fitment for a 911 by a Michelin tire engineer with European racing experience. Your experience may differ but the source is pretty reliable.

This was the second weekend I run 225/45 with 255/40 Michellin Cups and my car was pretty neutral with a hint of oversteer. I had a huge spin which was my fault <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> and nothing to do with the tires...I have the H&R coilovers, M030 sways lowered close to RS specs, 2.2 negative on the back 1.7 negative in the front. I plan to continue running these sizes as I'm very pleased. Pressures varied due to the track on each side, 27 front and 28 rear brought them hot to 34,35 respectively. They took a couple of laps to really stick the first lap is pretty dreadfull at first with a lot of motion due to sidewall flexing but you will get used to it. Overall a great tire and the wear has been phenomenal so far.

The 225/45 Sport Cup indeed no wider than a 205/50.

From the Michellin data sheet:
225/45-17 is 8.9" section width on 7.5" rim
205/50-17 is 9.0" section width on 7" rim

I have a set of 225 / 255 Sport Cups and the 225 fronts are identical width to my 205/50 SO-3 street tires.

So how does 225 help reducing understeer as many people have been using them for this purpose?
Thx for the info Bill.

I had V700 Victoracers in 225/255 and was pretty oversteery; camber F&R was pretty much the same, though, whereas I see Danny's got 1.7 & 2.2 F&R.

I was chasing hard a TT Supra and the white D stock 993 which they did not give me a passing wave for almost 2 laps, so I went hot on 4 droped the right front out too much on the apex , the car snapped to the left tried to catch it, got a tank slap then it was both feet in, a 360 and I ended up facing straight on the track Talking about a good show. Viking was impressed
