Why would one company make 2 tires in different sizes have the same section width? What I am missing?

I measured the tread width of my two sets of front tires:

Bridgestone S-03 205/50-17 7 7 8"
Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 225/45-17 8"
(I would say my measuring accuracy is ~1/8" so really not any difference in tire width)

Both on stock 17" front 993 rims.

For what it's worth, here is the chart from Michelin. From what I read, 205x50x17 has 8.1" of section width mounted on rims with width range from 5.5-7.5". And 225x45x17 has 8.8" of section width mounted on rims with width range from 7-8.5". So there is a decent increase in section width from going from 205 to 225. It doesn't say anything about tread width so I am still not clear about it.

Thx

Edit: Sorry Bill, the chart above is for Pilot Sport, not Cup. I was thinking of my tires.
