Question for 993 C4 owners
I am still searching for a 993, and while I would prefer a C2, there are some nice C4's that pop up from time to time.
In my search for the 997.2 C2 we own I drove several C4 models of that generation and they all had some level of shimmy in the steering wheel, which drives me nuts. I know it could have been a tire balance thing.
So I have two questions for you folks with 993 C4 models. First, do you get any of this vibration in the steering wheel? And for those that have converted your C4 to a C2 do you prefer the change and notice any less of this issue?
Thanks in advance for the advice!

I have a 1996 C4S and if everything is working correctly on the car the "4" will perform as any "2" would under the same circumstances. Likely the cars you tested were in need of control arm bushings which is a common need eventually on 993's. Another issue is tires (previously mentioned) and possibly brake rotors causing such under braking.

Same here.... no issues at all. I have auto-crossed my current C4 and my prior C2 993. I am sure a skilled driver could tell a difference between the two, but I couldn't. The C4 handled well.

no shimmy unless the control arm bushings need upgrading. i had the walrod bushings installed by the man himself over 10 years ago. no issues since.
note though, 993 C4 drives like a C2 with 95% of the drive going to the rear wheels. the 4WD is performance oriented and “activated” only when the extra traction is needed. nevertheless, im sure a C2’s steering is probably lighter and sharper. good luck.

Bent wheels or out-of-balance tires can induce a shimmy as well.

My 126000 mile C4 no shimmy unless sitting as people have referenced above. Tire shimmy.
