So the car has some small issues that I'm trying to sort -- it came with some sort of tape deck Alpine, which apparently was the highest end cassette-capable deck that Alpine offered in 1992, and would beep after maybe a minute of operation. I need Carplay in the car, and impulse bought a modern floating screen Pioneer display (purists are going to kick me) and had it installed along with a backup camera. The right tweeter didn't seem to work when I took delivery, so I had a local stereo shop investigate for me, and we found:
Bumper off for rear cam install
Late 90's cell phone tracker in the back parcel shelf
A totally exploded Focal Flax tweeter -- FML. Turns out a previous owner had spent maybe $2k+ on stereo equipment for the car (it has a Focal Flax 3-way in the doors, a Focal 4-ch amp + a tiny Focal 2-ch amp, and Focal coaxials in the rear deck) but someone had mangled the install. The tweeter was connected to wires for the midrange, and vice versa -- no wonder this tweeter was in multiple pieces LOL.
I replaced them with a new tweeter pair, but the rest of the mid/woofer install leaves a lot to be desired, so that's getting fixed next week.
Checking out some noises from the dash during AC operation
I guess I'll use this thread to post updates about the car -- does anyone care? LOL
Driving the car across the country is much more rewarding than shipping. Those memories will last a lifetime.
I did a Philadelphia => Sacramento via the south bound and it is still the best trip ever. I can't wait to do it again via a different route when my son is a little older.
Yes to more updates... what is that black goop around the speakers? Glue or tape?
It's sound deadening, but done in an ugly way. The bigger issue with the install is the woofer is a 6" and it's been forced into the factory 5.25" enclosure -- it sound like an old time AM radio because there's no bass extension from these woofers. Gonna fix next week, let's see how it goes haha
Would you be able to show a close up of the rear view camera? Did you need to make any holes in your bumper cover? A backup camera is something I've been missing in my 993. It's so low now that I can hit the concrete parking stops when parking backwards and figure this is a nice way to help relieve that stress.

I'll get you some photos this evening. Install required removing the rear bumper and drilling, all of the rear lights, and interior along the passenger's side to run wires. Cost a pretty penny in labor, but the camera itself looks almost stock.
Just caught up to this post. I recently purchased my 993 as well (last year). It appears the previous owner purchased nice speakers, but as you had pointed out, they are not meant for this application, thus they would sound like an AM radio. Hopefully, you're able to that out. As for Carplay, would the PCCM system not be a better solution than the floating screen? Awesome trip bringing it home!

Yeah! I think PCCM would've been better, but from my understanding it's limited in wiring options and (more importantly) doesn't allow me to run a backup camera. I'd have to run a mirror with a screen in it. Also, this was half the cost of PCCM
Oh yeah, I also forgot to note that I had the car tinted — this is the lightest shade of FormulaOne Stratos on the sides and rear. The front windshield got Llumar Air80. My savings account is slowly dying, a thousand dollars at a time haha
Fun pics and info. Thanks for sharing. In my 95 993 cab I have an older alpine head unit working with the stock hifi amp and I'm guessing I have stock speakers and am thinking about eventually replacing everything to get a louder music sound with the top down. Glad you are enjoying your 993. Cheers!
Great stuff! Love Aventura Green!
quick tip - for superior bass extension in hifi equipped 993s, this is what Rod at Car Audio Innovations does (he’s kinda the OG on these cars since 1991) …
Make the system a 2 way. Put the Focal 6.5” mounted on a plastic spacer directly to the door. Mount the focal tweeter to the backside of the grill. Do not use the enclosure. Disconnect the factory tweeter. Plenty of bass that way…
