Andrew:
Given that you have a 96 with the OBD2, you might make sure your OBD2 flags are showing "ready" before you go in for the test. Even though your car may pass the visual and the SMOG readings themselves, if any of the 6 OBD2 flags are not "ready", the car will be failed. Bummer...huh?
Typical cause for these flags not being set are recent battery disconnects, or other service tech work, etc. If you know of anyone with an OBD2 tester, checking the flags is worth the peace of mind before having the SMOG test performed.

Jim:
Thanks for the info, I do have the tester loaded in my laptop, I'll be checking them.
Now for the San Diego folks, where will be the best place in Oceanside to take my car for smog test?
Thanks,
Andrew

After several unsuccessful atempts to get my 96 993 smogged under the new regs, I went to a "smog referee". The car passed due to the smog referees knowledge of the OBDII problems with the 993 and the California smog station software.
You can try to go the smog station route, but if it doesn't work for you, call the state smog referee. You will pass there.

911Jeff is correct. The Porsche OBDII has a compatibilty problem. Many
of my customers' customers have had to deal with this issue. Don't
have any dealer or shop indicate that you need to purchase a new
DME (Yes, I've heard this.) to pass an emissions test. Press the issue
with the referee, as it's a Porsche OBDII compatability design problem
on the '96 993.
As a side note, I recently was involved with a 993TT which had the DME
"flashed" for performance, and as a result the diagnostic firmware was
removed. This resulted in major problems for the owner when an emissions
test was required. He had to buy another DME ($1200 - $1600), since the
dealer was unable to re-flash the unit.

Hi Folks,
It passed!!!!
Did the smog test last Friday 5/21/04 and here are the results:
15 mph 1479 rpm %CO2 meas. 14.2 %O2 meas. 0.9
25 mph 2423 rpm %CO2 meas. 14.4 %O2 meas. 0.4
15 mph HC Max 54 Ave 9 Meas 0
CO Max 0.50 Ave 0.02 Meas 0.00
NO Max 430 Ave 57 Meas 2
25 mph HC Max 37 Ave 7 Meas 0
CO Max 0.47 Ave 0.03 Meas 0.00
NO Max 717 Ave 50 Meas 17
This was done at a Smog Test Only station. This place was recommended to me by Pioneer Porsche, Miramar Rd, San Diego (no affiliation)
The owner of the smog test place recommended to drive the car for about 3 consecutive days and drive it well before I bring it in, this is all I did, did not even look at the OBD ll codes.
