Post Does anyone have a spare 3.8 993 RS engine laying around? (My weekend at Road Atlanta

I really need some more horsepower! I was at the Road Atlanta Club Race this weekend, perfect weather and a great field and tons of spectators. This event is Club Racing at its finest (since I have only been to a half a dozen PCA races I am a little biased ).
[Edit]
-Kudos to the Peachstate region for putting this race together. They did an excellent job, ran on-time (compared to Sebring which was always a half hour behind) and provided great hospitality. This race will be on my to do list every year from now on-

If you like looking at race cars, the paddock would have been heaven for you. Close to 200 cars ranging from the latest GT3RS to early 911's and 914's, and even a few cars I just couldn't place (what was that orange thing?).

My class (C) which includes hot rodded RS Americas, 993, 993RS, and 996's started off the weekend with close to 10 cars. By the race we were down to 6. There was a true European RS in my group and he and another RSA traded places for the fast times in practice. Then the rest of us were seperated by less than a second. I wasn't too happy with my performance early Saturday but I tend to not go very fast until I am pushed.
We had a practice start/fun race on Saturday and I did fairly well time wise but I got hung out when two cars in front of me touch going into 7 and I had to almost stop. About three of my competitors got around me, but the good news was my time had dropped into the low 1:41's on older tires.
The next morning we had a short warm up and our qualifying was scheduled for 8:30 am and the ambient temps were around 40 degrees and the track was very cold. A car in the first session ( I was in the second) was brought in on a truck, a 993 RSR that hit a wall, right past were we where gridded and that set a little fear in me. I needed a good time but didn't want to push too hard on a cold track.
I ended up 5th out of 6 cars in my class and 30th out of 40 cars overall, with a 1:42 on new tires . One of the top cars went wide coming out of 12 and hit the wall a fair bit down the front straight after trying to save it. I didn't see the damage real close but it didn't look as bad as it could have been.

At the start of the race I had two 996's gridded in front of me and one Yellow 993 RS spec car behind me. I knew I was a bit faster (lap times not hp) than the cars in front of me and the guy behind me was within a few hundreths of me. I talked to him and suggested that we not race each other until after we pass these two guys, we didn't want to let them get too far away. ( So much for planning)

At the start I held back a bit and accelerated into position right as the green flag dropped. I caught both 996's off guard and split them up the middle. I have never had a start this good and can't believe I don't have a video of it. I held my position well and the 993 behind me got past me on the straight since he has 30+ hp on me. The car in second place spun and we got by. I followed the yellow 993 for a couple laps as we went through some traffic. Coming out of turn one he hit his rev limiter real hard like four times or so and I had a run into three. I made a lower percentage pass on the inside, honestly wasn't a very good move as I didn't "own the corner" yet. I am thankful that he gave me plenty of room. From there on I picked up enough time around the track that he couldn't get me on the back straight. I also got lucky with letting the lead cars pass in the best of places and I think he got held up by the same cars.
I finished 2nd and was thrilled I moved up 7 spots to 23rd out of 40 as well. My best finish yet. I wasn't the 2nd fastest car but one of the most important parts of racing is just finishing.

Congratulations to Hank for his first place finish in GTC2 (996 Cup cars). He was neck and neck with a pro driver and Hank showed him whose track this was! Awesome job Hank

Joe Fabiani was also sponsoring a car in F class driven by Oliver Zitzman who was faster than most of the D and E cars. Joe, good choice of driver and car to sponsor that guy was flying.

It was good seeing Robin again also, I hope he got some great pics with that million dollar camera .

Greg,

Below are the pictures I took from your race group. Unfortunately I was having a little bit of camera problem (with the million dollar camera) and wasn't able to take more race pictures from your group.

It was nice to see you again, and thank you very much for spoiling me.

Bill,
Jim Collier won my class in his Euro 933 RSCS. Best time was 1:41.017, he probably wasn't pushing real hard because he was in the 1:38 range for qualifying. Phil Blackstone was a front runner also but lost control and damaged his car and thus got a 13/13 and had to sit out. My best time in the race was 1:41.461. In the practice race I was at a 1:41.3. The guy that finished right behind me had a 1:41.475. We were less than a second apart at the finish line.

The only one that I know from Chicago was Janusz Tokarczyk. I think he goes by Jon, he drove a RS America. He went in a little hot to try and pass me into turn 7 (hairpin before the back straight and didn't see another car in front of me going for the apex and tapped his rear quarter with his head light. Unfortunate but I think he was being a little over anxious, my opinion only but I did have a very close view point . I think there was another guy that drives a red 996 named Mike Flaska from Chicago but he was with Kelly Moss and I didn't meet him. A guy from Atlanta in a silver 996.

That is a great story Greg. Good Job!

I am registered for Lime Rock as my first Club Race and applied for VIR Club Race. Sounds like some pretty exciting stuff. Cannot wait!

Bill,
THat next 30-40 hp isn't going to be cheap is it?
I have applied for the VIR race, hope we get a chance to finally meet and engage in some friendly competition.

My advice: Keep your nose clean and drive your line, the biggest mistake I made in my first race was just letting people by when ever. There is an art to letting faster guys by when it is best for YOU. If they want to pass you in a turn make them go off line and risk sliding around in the marbles.
Keep your mind on what your goal is... (IMO) it should be to finish in one piece and learn from the "fast guys", don't worry about how you do overall or within your class. Paddock with someone who has a lot of experience and talk with them about things that happen and ask for advice on how to deal with different situations most guys are more than happy to help if you ask them.

If you don't already have Skip Barber's book "Going Faster" get it immediately, take it with you to the track and read at night. I believe it will help you.

Best of luck, and if you think you are hooked now what until after your first race.

Thanks Greg, Your advise pretty well matches my overall plan.

Do I have Going Faster? A copy at the office, home and in my track bag. All copies are well worn.

Look at the hardware listed on Schattenbaums web site for the DE before the Lime Rock Club Race. Impressive. This will give me some more seat time at Lime Rock before the Club Race festivities begin.

Hope to see you at VIR!

Thumbs up

Greg,

Congrats on your finish and another great post! I really enjoy your racing posts. For some reason it is exciting hearing about these events from your point of view because you don't have the luxury of messing up your car and hopping into another one. In other words, I can relate to your decision making, i.e. not pushing too much with cold tires, sitting out the race because of rain, etc... On the other hand, you still have to be aggressive or you will be last almost every time out. Great post and keep them coming.

Rob,
Thanks for saying that. I remember reading other guys websites about their races and I always enjoyed their stories. Sometimes they end good, others not so good but part of the fun of racing is dealing with the unexpected (good and bad) and not letting it get the best of you. I had a problem with one of my rims as it was out of balance and would cause the whole car to shake at anything over 100mph or so, not a good thing when you are heading down 12 onto the front straight, so I had them rebalanced. Had to wait until Sunday morning to see if it helped. Sure didn't, turns out the wheel had a very slightly bent rim and it took another guy to pick up on it. So I had to qualify 15 minutes after my warmup and had to change one rim out with my other set. I had one new tire and one older one. We put it on the least crucial side (passenger since most of the turns were right handed), it was kind of weird to have the car push in certain turns and do perfect in others.
Anyway, look at this website if you want to see a couple guys that are really nutz about racing. www.nsxfiles.com
Regards,
Greg

I just finished looking through the rest of the pictures the gentleman took at the track. http://www.photoreflect.com/scripts/prsm.dll enter "Peachstate"
There are quite a few shots of all the race groups. I was able to pick out some of our local boys from So Cal who took their yearly trip back and had a great time. 9Alarcon, Dalrymple and Martini...) For curiosity, do you know where a results page would be listed?

Laura:

I have a copy of the Group 4 race results if you are interested that I could fax to you. Regarding the three you mentioned, Brent Martini finished 9th overall, 3rd in class from a 6th place qualifying position. Steven Alarcon finished 20th overall, 1st in class from a 23rd place qualifying position. Lastly, Robert Dalrymple finished 29th overall, 5th in class from a 35th place qualifying position.
