Post Aluminum Shift/Brake B4 & After (pic)

A while back I posted a message asking for help in finding a replacement for my stock shifter ****. My problems in maing the change were a) cost of the factory aluminum brake/shift kit which was $1,250 at the dealer; and b) inability to match the classic gray leather shift boot on aftermarket alternatives.

I got some great help, especially from Viken. I was leaning toward a Techart option but then (with Viken's help) found a retailer (germantech) that had the original factory kit for $850. I decided to go with this and keep the car "factory original". I went with the black leather boot as I thought it would add some nice contrast to an interior that is a bit too "gray".

I'm real happy with the change. Not just visually, but the feel of the spherical aluminum shifter is more natural than the flat topped factory standard shifter.

Looks nice.
You should consider black floor mats. I have the same interior and tried the black mats which look great. (I have a black dash.)

It looks like you got new floor mats as well. Is that correct? If so, I have the exact same color int. you have and need new mats badly. Where did you purchase them and for how much? I only need new front mats.

BTW, the shifter and E-brake look great! I'll be doing the same soon....

I went with the black floor mats in my C2S that has a grey interior and it looks good. I got the idea from another Rennlist member, John D II. He did a lot of carbon fiber upgrades also which look nice, but I can't personally justify spending $1K or more to dress up the interior.

Interesting idea on the black floor mats -- hadn't thought of that. The gray supplemental mats that I have came with the car when I purchased it from the original owner. I don't know where he got them.

While we're on the topic of interior changes, here is another post of the before and after of my guage face change. This made a big difference.

roger sf,

The shifter and brake handle look great! I am buying a 96 993 C4S tommorrow and it has the tan leather shifter so I am thinking about changing it after a while. Did you do the work yourself, it so how hard was it?

Hi Everyone,

While on the subject, here is a picture of the classic gray with the black carpets and some carbon fiber. Coincidentally, I ordered the balance of the carbon fiber interior (full dash kit, 2 center console pieces, e-brake tray and door panel inserts) yesterday, as well as the VDO aluminum gauge faces, cat bypass pipes, FVD exhaust/mufflers and factory wide chrome oval tips. I'm taking the car one more step toward the final goal which includes the FVD ECU, additional oil cooler, euro front "turbo S" bumber, turbo S rear wing, sport seats and some sort of performance suspension. I am curious to document what difference (both sound and response) the cat bypass pipes/exhaust swap makes to an otherwise stock twin turbo.

John, I am sure it has been discussed ad nauseum, but really fast, where can I find those floor mats? Are the factory items?

Thanx,

Hi EJ,

I ordered them from Performance Products. They take about 3-4 weeks to come in, as they are made to order. They are the LLoyd's mats that many vendors sell. These say "turbo", I am not sure what other scripts they allow due to trademark issues, but I think "Porsche" is only available through Porsche. I think "Carrera" and "911" are allowed. If you want "Porsche", it is a dealer item and possibly available quicker that the LLoyd's brand.

One more thing about the black mats - they stay new looking much longer than the classic gray. I was buying classic gray mats every 3-4 months as they would quickly discolor and mat under the heel area. I have had these black ones for about a year now (with more use than previous years) and they still look like new.

John,

The newer mats are worse than the older Porsche supplied ones. I had a set of Classic grey mats in my 964 for about 23K miles and never noticed any wear. If you like the color better than black, I suggest you look into some higher quality aftermarket mats.

Viken, thanks for the info. Actually, I prefer the black as a contrasting color. The gray mats that wore quickly were both the Porsche factory mat and the LLoyd mat (purchased about 2 two years ago). Is there another brand that is better than the Lloyd that you are aware of?

I am also interested in some new front mats. I have the dark gray int. I am still unsure if I want black mats. Mine are discolored badly.

Any URLs you guys can list to order online?

What brand would you go with? Call me crazy, but I want a high-quality (thick) mat without any script on it. I know it's a Porsche!

Sean
