tip in '3' mode?
Ummm, excuse my ignorance, but while you tipers are together, i feel that i must take the opportunity to ask some questions, even silly ones. My car is a '95 Tip S.
Firstly, is it normal for the car to normally only select 2nd gear when at a standstill and rarely drop to 1st?
Secondly, when it learns your driving style, dose living in a city and continually being in traffic jams mess up what the car has learned from you?
What other tricks are there for getting the most out of the tip box?
Thanks!

2) yes, constant traffic jams mess it up.. I notice my first track session is warm up to get my tip back up to snuff.... by the 2nd and 3rd session, all is the way I expect...
- when in manual mode, NEVER upshift.. let it do it on it's own.. ONLY use the downshift.... and downshift from the floor is a faster downshift than on the steering controls
anyone else want to chime in?
Great thread folks! I'd like to chime in with a question as well. My '96 tip is a daily driver (DC traffic) and I only drive in manual. Last weekend I took it out for my first HPDC (prereq for DE) and she drove great. However, since then I've noticed the car upshifting on it's own at low rpms while in manual mode. Is this normal? Also, is it normal (as mentioned previously) for the car to upshift on its own through all of the gears are just from 1st to 2nd?

the reason i like to use '3' is that i would be driving locally on low speed roads and desire to use auto mode. i can stay in 3rd at 50-60 with lots of room to spare. it also goes down to first upon stopping, and smoothly upshifts without without having it go into 4th at like 35 mph.

1) yes, this is normal... it goes into fuel efficient mode automatically.. if you start mashing the pedal often, you'll notice it start going down to 1 too

#2 Traffic does seem to have an effect if in auto mode. I typically shift manually in stop and go, or shift into "2" if the engine is warm.
#3 Agreed!

i have the car packed away for a day or two of rain, so cant experiment.
I only drive my tip in manual mode. The only time I don't like the tip over a 6 speed is on canyon runs coming out of a tight hairpin heading UP hill. In this situation I down shift into first apply WOT coming out of the apex, shift to second and the revs drop too low and I am out of - or at the bottom of - the power band when I need it.
I often ask but have never had explained why they went with a 4 speed instead of 5 or 6 on the Tip?
