After reading a recent thread about various brake bleeding techiques and tools I ordered the Motive Power Bleeder from Performance Products.

I just finished a 4-wheel complete bleed job that took me 30 minutes by myself, with almost no mess and no headaches. This is an EXCELLENT product that is simple in design, yet incredibly effective.

For nearly 10 years I've used a Mityvac vacuum pump to bleed various brake systems. I almost always ended up with a mess and good results were hard to achieve. The positive-pressure Motive unit is a snap to use and literally blows the vacuum system away.

Honestly, this may be the best $40 I've ever spent. If anyone in the South Bay would like a demo, for a limited time, I'll come to your garage and we'll bleed your brakes (Porsche's only of course!). You supply the ATI Super Blue fluid since that's what I have loaded in the unit already.

The key to having a successful experience is the last step, removing the device as you are finishing the left front. You must turn the bottle on its side and bleed off what is in the line between the master cylinder and the bottle, keeping the bleeded valve open until the line is clear. Forget to do this (This tip is in the instructions that we all hate to read), and there will be brake fluid everywhere. You will be sopping it up for a week. Also, the errant random fluid may find its way into your remote CD unit connections to the radio.

It is probably not best to store large amounts of brake fluid in the jug itself. With brake fluid being hygroscopic (having the property to readily take up and retain moisture), it may become contaminated. If this were to happen, the boiling point of the fluid is greatly reduced, with the resultant air bubbles appearing in the presence of heat, and soft pedal to follow shortly thereafter.

I agree with all, the bleeder is a great tool.

Kim - Bring it to the autocross on Saturday and I'll do it there if you'd like (as long as it's not raining . Or, I'll bring mine but you'll need ATI Blue and an extra container for fluid disposal of course.

Martin - I agree on all points. Fortunately, I did read the directions carefully so there were no unpleasant surprises. I did find that the unit left my brake fluid resevoir overfilled and ironically, the Mityvac was perfect for extracting the excess.

Matt, I'd be great if you could come over and show me how to do it. Or I could come over to your place, if that is easier for you. Depending if I can get my car back this weekend for the AutoX, how about sunday, May 26th?? If that is too soon, how about the next saturday, June 1st? ( There's a concours/swapmeet on that sunday in hayward )

As far as hosting another clinic in my garage, I'm all for it! I've got at least one day free each weekend this month and next month. Let me know if that works out for you guys.

Btw, what do you do with the used brake fluid???

I'm in favor of a clinic at Jeff's house. How about Saturday, June 1 at around 10am, followed by a drive up to Alices Restaurant on Skyline Drive? We can take the scenic route!

Jeff- San Jose recycling picks up our used oil every week which is nice, but they won't touch brake fluid or anti-freeze.

I've been storing used brake fluid, solvents, paint thinner, and kerosene that I use for parts cleaning, in an old 5-gallon fuel can. Every couple of years, I take it to my local Chevron and they dump it in their hazerdous materials waste conatiner. I usually slip the guy $10.

No need to use the Mityvac. When you tip the Motive (pick up tube is out of the fluid) to use its air pressure to purge the hose, keep it tipped & just bleed out additional fluid under pressure until the master cylinder level is where you want it. Fast, simple & clean.
BTW, did the ATE Blue stain the Motive container?

I haven't checked to see if the container is stained but from what I've heard, the Super Blue stains pretty much everything it comes in contact with.
