Hey Todd - Nope, just #'s 1 and 2 were worn bad enough to require the seats being replaced. However, all the guides are being upgraded as part of the valve job.

Three Wheelin'
Luke,
Surely it makes sense to replace all the guides while you're in there. What I'm curious about is whether all the guides showed enough wear to be a problem (even though not significant enough to cause seat damage), or was it just 1 and 2? In other words, if guides 1 and 2 were in the same shape as 3 - 6, would the car have needed new guides?

Todd - Try it again, I only have 2 messages in there
RE: the guides - Only the guides in heads 1 and 2 needed replacement. The compression check showed no problems in cyls 3-6. Strange huh ?
Randy - NO SHIAT !!! Thanks man....
Steve - In the picture of the valve seat damage, the SAI is the small hole in the upper port. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but if I remember correctly that is what Mark at Herge pointed out...

Somehow it gets back together
Here's photos of my engine torn down in 11/02 for top end rebuild and misc replacements. Done at Beverly Hills Porsche. Took them 11 weeks and cost $9000. Caution, photos not for the easily disturbed.

What the?
Hey, the first two photos are not my car. Let's try that again. These are all of my engine. Any comments about Beverly Hills Porsche attention to detail and cleanliness?

what are you doing with the exhaust? What is wrong with it? Are you replacing it because of the rust or something else? Is it part of preventive maintenance?
Thanks.

Alex - Hergesheimer has been modifying stock exhausts for a long time, even before Robin started doing his RSR's. For $500 they cut the stock mufflers open and rework the insides. I assume they just pull some of the baffeling, but what exactly is done I am not quite sure. Per my conversation with Laura, it is basically the same thing Robin does.
LeeR - That looks like more than just a top end rebuild. Why was it needed and what all was done ? Nice pics btw, thanks...
Todd - Actually there are 2 guides PER cylinder, so 4 were bad. No clue how the others made it and 4 didn't - go figure...Apparently it is a well known fact that Porsche used soft guides on all 993 motors. At least I don't have to worry about this from now on...

Thanks to your post my list of the things to be covered has grown, though (RS mounts, powersteering belt). Mechanic told me not to worry about spark plug wires... Don't know yet if I should push it or not... What is the consensus on spark wires expectancy life?

The plug wires themselves, parts only cost about $500. But the labor to replace them with the motor in the car is a joke. It takes about 6 hours to do it with the motor in the car, with the motor out, it takes about 10 mins. So, if your motor is out, it is a very good thing to do. If you motor is in the car, don't do it until you HAVE to.
