Default Rattle noise from back shelf

Has anyone experienced a rattle coming from the back shelf? At Idle and low speeds, I have a rattle that sounds like it is coming from either the seatbacks or the seat belt area. I have taken that area apart and found nothing suspicious as well as looked in the engine bay.

This past weekend I had a fellow 993 owner ride in my car and he claimed to have the same rattle. I figured it may be a common rattle that someone has located the solution to. Has anyone had this happen?

It isn't a huge deal but is starting to become an annoying thing. Thanks for your help.

Moose,

It sounds like the dreaded "window creak". This is common to the front and rear windshields. When I first got my car two years ago I thought, as you do, the noise was a typical loose interior part. Turned out to be the rear window creaking, but sounds just like an interior rattle. My front windshield has never made any noise, probably because it was replaced by Porsche for the other (dreaded) delamination problem.

Do a search on "windshield creaking". There is a pretty good fix; install the foam rope kit and soak every six months or so with silicone spray or Pedros Ice Wax. I think the silicone spray works better.

Call me if you want more info. I have the service bulletin and the foam rope kit part number at home. Office is 800-333-0519 x 106.

I use to have one and blamed the rear speakers. I just placed some foam padding under them and taped it to the speakers. I haven't heard the noise ever since.

There is no rattle, you just need louder exhausts

Does the noise seem to be coming from the passenger side? If so, go into the engine compartment. Start closing the hood and look at the mount for the hood shock on the deck lid. Depending upon the model, the power steering hose metal end may be contacting this mount only when the hood is closed....

Just a thought..

Moose,

Does your car have a rear wiper? Shortly after I bought my car, a nasty rattle started in the rear shelf area. I removed the shelf, and eventually noticed that the wiper assembly was loose. A quick tightening solved the problem.

I'll bet its your rear spoiler. I isolated a similar ratlle to this. My solution was simple. I raised the spoiler, doubled up two (or more) felt stick on tabs (from the hardware store) & placed them in the corners underneath the spoiler. I have'nt heard the rattle or seen the tabs for over a year! Hope this is it!

Can also be the rear wheel arch liners, I eventually tracked a rattle down to someone having fitted too long a screw where the liners join, the end of the screw was tapping against the inside of the arch.

had this on both mine - take off the rear parcel shelf and check the wires that run underneath, they are taped down and over time the tape dries out and lets them loose. Re-taping them back down with duck tape stops the rattle.

Took me 3 months to work out this was the cause

Drove me CRAZY...

My license plate bracket was the culprit.
