Question Motor Mounts

Has anyone here ever replaced their motor mounts? I decided to use my $100 PCA coupon on a pair of RS motor mounts. Yes, I know I’ll feel more vibration (don’t care). Now to get to the point of the question, is it as easy as it appears?

1.) Jack the car up
2.) Undo the bottom nuts
3.) Jack the engine up slightly
4.) Undo the two bolts on the motor mounts
5.) Redo in reverse order.

I’m debating about doing it myself unless I hear some horror stories.

You sure make it sound easy! I'm interested in hearing about this as well.

I think I remember someone posting that an intermediate upgrade is to use the cabriolet motor mounts instead of RS - just FYI.

The cab motor mounts were actually more than the RS. I paid about $250 less the $100 discount (so, $150 in total for both). Just remember to get all the washer and bolts because they are a different design. It was Glen G that recomeded the cab mounts, but since I already have monoballs, I figured it wouldn't make that big of a difference.

BTW, 3.) should have said lower the engine a little with the jack. The jack should be holding up the engine while you undo the two bottom nuts.

Now I'm just curious: what was the difference between the cabriolet and non-cab motor mounts?

I have a Targa, which was built on a cab chassis, so I'm guessing I would have cab motor mounts already?

The trade-off is between isolating the passengers from NVH (noise/vibration/harshness) from the engine, or enhancing the chassis' stiffness.

In order from soft to firm (stiff/harsh):

coupe
cab
RS

I don't know where the targa lies - but I'll guess it uses the cab motor mounts.

Do I sence a GROUP BUY???
I was looking into this and I was hovering around the idea of getting the FVD solid mounts. The 964 boys have discussed this extensively and the solid mounts seem to be the ticket with track work in mind...
George and Robert if you guys organize something let me know.

Happy New Year to all!!!!

Allow me to add my inputs - I have both RS motor mounts and RS tranny mounts.

Summary - just feels tighter all around, expecially on the track and when hammering the throttle. No discernable difference in noise, vibration over stock - feels transparant under normal driving conditions.

Is it worth doing? My opinion is yes. Just looking at the bulky, huge oem mounts and the RS, the RS are just more aggressive. I guess the theory behind RS mounts (or any mounts, for that matter) is less is dampened between engine and tranny, therefore making sense that RS mounts make for a far tighter drive.

I just love RS components - factory engineered killer components!

On a personal note, I wish everyone a Happy New Year and all the best for you and your loved ones, naturally including our beloved 993's!!

If I may, here's what's available for 993 engine mounts through Porsche:

965.375.049.00 C2/Cabrio, Left
965.375.050.00 C2/Cabrio, Right

993.375.049.05 C4/Cabrio, uses two

964.375.043.80 RS, uses two (plus assorted washers, as pointed out above).

964 European cup cars used solid magnesium mounts, which I believe are still available. 964 US cup cars used the RS mounts above.

Here's what's involved with the RS mounts:

The extra parts needed to install the RS mounts in a 993 are:

964.375.043.80 Engine mounts (qty 2)
901.305.311.00 Seat (qty 4)
900.082.030.02 Bolt (qty 2)
999.025.074.02 Washer (qty 4)
999.025.134.02 Washer (qty 4)

You'll reuse the big nut at the bottom of each of the hydraulic engine mounts, as well as the 2 bolts on each side of the existing mounts.

So do the RS mounts lower the engine a bit for a lower center of gravity or are they just harder?

Matt check the thread out from the 964 board. Especially Manny's post of his RS mounts searing off and his engine almost droping down on the track put me into a lot of thought for us track junkies... I'm planning to swap to solid mounts just have not figured out which ones yet...

Oleg,

Did you install them yourself or did you have a shop do them? Also, I was looking for the RS transmission mount but could not find the part number. Would you have it?

To all,

Will the RS motor mounts fit a C4?
Also, what about the RS transmission mount?

Thanks

I had a shop do it. Engine and tranny were out, so I took advantage of the situation.

I have the part #'s on my other computer. Stay-tuned...
