Doug - What type of car are you thinking about? The fastest time I have seen there for a street legal car is 1:12 (for a Corvette Z06 with R rubber and track pads driven by a pro racer). My friend has a Caterham 7 with 225hp and does 1:13's on street tires. The track record is 1:01 by an Indy car driver in his race car. Formula Continentals do around 1:06. The ALMS Vipers do around 1:09. Most well-driven fast street cars (996, M3, etc.) are in the high teens...

Grant -

That is what I was looking for. Having not driven the track in a number of years, and have been wondering what 993s, 996s are turning. I remember that my dad's 930 was only capable of 20's or so. I'd love to hear what Skips cup car is turning.

I remember the stories of Danny S turning the 1:01 when they were prepping for the first Denver Grand Prix, didn't know what progress had been made since.

Its kinda like the recent Automobile article where they pit the old race cars against the new street car (GT3), and the amount of progress which street cars have made in the last 50 years.

Thanks Grant.

Hi Doug,

I was running 1:15s the first time out last Sunday, with a few 1:14s and one 1:13. One of the 3R drivers in a similar car was running consistent 1:12s, and a truly great driver could probably shave another second or two off of that.

One thing that should make my car even faster is the switch to good R compound tires or slicks. I was running the Toyo RA-1s that came on the car, 245/40-18 front and 275/35-18 rear. They are shaved, but still have quite a bit of tread on them. I'll be running Hoosier R3S04s initially, 245/40-18 front and 305/30-18 rear.

For comparison, I ran the same size RA-1s on my 993 for rain tires (unshaved), and was running 1:17s. A switch to the R3S03s (again the same size as the Hoosiers listed above) dropped 3 seconds off that time, so I think that 1-2 seconds better in the 996 is feasible with the Hoosiers.

A friend is using the R3S04s on his 944 Turbo and ran a high 1:14 at the SCCA race recently. That's 2-3 seconds faster than anyone in one of those cars has run recently, so the R3S04s look like they're the ticket for DOT R compounds.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to trying the S04's the next time I need rubber. Luckily, they make those in 15" sizes for the 73RS

And Doug, when I said most quick street cars are in the high teens, I was thinking of street cars with DOT R rubber. Very few street cars on OEM tires can best 1:20 (GT3, 996TT can but not many others) unless they're very well driven...

Thanks guys -

Light and fast - I've only heard good things about the new Hoosiers, sounds like the ticket.

Skip, when are you going to sell the 993?
