Removing Crank Pulley
#3
JC - Don't have the part # as I am away from my LA for a while. I'm sure someone else will chime in however. Alternatively on the p-car.com website Jeff993TT (I think) posted a recomended set of tools for 993 owers and listed this part.
The part is a special socket (12 pts I think) to hold the crank fixed. IIRC it was $15-20 at the dealer with PCA discount. Some dealers have to special order this so you may have to check around, or perhaps just buy over the net.

I think JC is asking about something different here. His question was removing the pulley of the crankshaft and not the pulley on the alternator. Is this correct JC? If so, then you are going to need someway to hold the flywheel when reinstalling and torquing to spec...

I had to do this step for the TPC supercharger install too. The belt method works good. There is a tool that grabs the flywheel teeth (I think you have to remove the starter to access the teeth). I also have a tiptronic. You can start out by using a lot of heat on the crankshaft bolt to remove it. There is a small metal dowel locating pin so don't pry on the pulley itself too much (you don't want to bend it). Use red loctite when you torque the bolt back onto the pulley. You will need to have a torque wrench that reads up to 200 ft. lbs. I bought mine from Sears. You will also need a HEAVY DUTY impact gun to get that bolt on there nice and tight!
Send me a PM and I can loan you the tools you will need (I'm in Ann Arbor).
Good luck,
Dale

You may in fact be stuck locking the flywheel (really the flexplate for Tip) to get that bolt off and torqued back up.. Leaving the trans in PARK wont lock the crank.
Not sure about using 271 or 272 Red Loctite, maybe 242 (Blue) after a good cleaning of the threads for a proper bond..
Also, I believe there is a factory tool for removing the crank pulley. I swore there was a recent thread on this very subject..
Hope this helps!

Can't help with the tool or technique, but I want a ride in that puppy when the SC install is done!!! Have been seriously considering the same mod for my car, and there aren't many Tiptronic TPC cars in our neck of the woods.
JC, any chance you car will be ready in time for the Chicago Area Rennlisters event on June 26th? We'd love to have you and there will be several 993s leaving from the north shore....

JC, I grew up racing small sailboats, and was a local hero (Bemis Trophy youth championship) in the 470. ;-) As much as I want you to join us on the 26th, I can not wish bad luck on a sailor before a race! So, hope it works out for you.
PM me when the dust has settled on your TPC project, I would love a ride at your convenience.

JC,
Using the belt method to remove the crankshaft pulley does work with copious amounts of map gas on the crankshaft bolt! To get it back on, the belt method is a little different since you have now switched to serpentine drive. Whatever the case, you should be able to reach the torque limit you need to get the pulley back on. The motor will turn over a few times. I do not have that "special" tool. Don't forget to use the red loctite. I can get you the exact number for that tonight. The red loctite for putting the supercharger is different as it is an anaerobic sealer.
