Post 15K service questions (searched archives)

I searched the archives and came up with a wide variety of answers for the following...

1. What should a 15,000 mile service cost?

2. What should it include? I know what the manual says but the archives seem to indicate that every shop does something different.

Any thoughts gratefully rec'd.

No idea what it should cost but I imagine that it is pretty pricey.

Most of what it calls for is just inspections and an oil and filter change. If your new car is over 5 years old and hasn't had the belts, plugs or transmission fluid change I would just skip this and go to the 30K mile service which includes all of the above and then some.

I'll add that cost for this and other types of service can vary by location because the hourly labor charge can be $100+ in some places (like SF Bay Area) and less in other places.

I have done the 15000 miles "stuff" piecemeal rather than as a 15000 mile service. As long as I keep records is this OK? Also, given that my car is a '96 with 14K (I just bought it so next year it should have 30K) should I do the 30K service now (belts have already been replaced by me) or wait till 30K?
As always, thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge with a amature!

Not sure about the 15k cost, but I had the 30k service done for right around $750. It included the following:

- oil change
- transmission fluid change
- brake fluid change
- power steering fluid change
- spark plugs
- distributor caps & rotors
- pollen filters
- air filter
- fuel filter

Hope this helps...

DC,

If I follow, your '98 is at 15K? You might want to be thinking about time as opposed to mileage and do a 30K and then clock from there.

My $0.02...

That's what I was wondering.....the 30K seems to only be a little more than the 15K although it seems more comprehensive.

Are belts included at the 30K?

Anything else I should have done in addition to what the book lists for the 30K service?

Not sure, but that an easy one when someone is in there freshing things up. As far as other things go, charge the A/C (or wait til spring), hows the alignment? and the hood/lid shocks.

Where you taking your car to get the work done?

I'm thinking Inskip.....David Jankowski (Porsche Service Guy) was a huge help to me when I was looking for a car. I'm now trying to get a perspective on pricing to make sure my a$$ is covered.

SO....30K service + belts + hood/engine shocks + A/C.

Anything else?

Dealer work is always the most expensive Dana Spada (lead tech at Clair) is a great (read: honest) guy, if you are looking around. Price wise Randolf Racing does good work at reasonable prices.

As far as the work, the 30K covers all the fluids, filters and engine wear items. You got the belts covered, and will check those lovely lid shocks...Any warning lights come up? A diagnostic tool will read any codes from the warning sensors.

I've owned a few 911's and am pretty critical and I can't find much wrong with this car in the 200+ miles I've put on it.

There is a tiny chip in the paint (filled) on the driver's side gutter.

The Aerokit wing makes a tiny rattle noise from the driver's side of it if I hit a sharp bump due to the lowered and stiffer RS springs. I think I can fix this by adjusting the hinges on the read lid.

I am ordering a new set of rear tires....these are down to 3/16" of tread.

Other than that - nothing. Not a scratch, not a mark on the interior, nothing. The PO even put stone guard around the wheel well lips to prevent marks.

I'll have them give it a good look over anyway.

For my 15K, I had the oil, oil filters changed, brake fluid and slave cylinder flushed. They also went over the car, including alignment, and found nothing else that needed be replaced. Said fuel filter and belts could wait another 5-10K miles, But I had the fuel filter and belts replaced anyway. I am just too fanatical about preventive stuff. I had replaced myself the air and pollen filters before the 15K service. Cost was about three hours labor @ ~ 100. per, plus parts.

For the plugs, they said to wait until 30K. Maybe because using Techron and driving habits that has been keeping plugs and injectors clean. When I am ready for plugs to replaced I probably will include new wires and distributor caps/rotors.

Sounds like you found a great cars. Good luck with it.

Don't replace the wires unless they show cracking or other issues. The beru wires should last for quite a long time.
