Default Check-Strap Assembly mod.

This in no way answers the factory weld question, but is a useful mod that I followed and it works well in reducing the stress imposed on the door stop pivot.. It is a technical article from Pelican Parts and is titled "993 door check-strap assembly" by Wayne Dempsey and Chris Walrod. It details how to modify the check-strap, and requires opening up each door and removing the check-strap itself, opening it up, cleaning it and shaving off about .040 from each rubber block. I did it and the door check function still works but with much less stress on the pivot point in the door jam. It requires only basic mechanical skill, if I could do it you can too. Very detailed instructions with photos. This was a Saturday type project and took me about 5 hours start to finish. You likely need to order 2 door pivot pins to complete the job.

I'm big on DIY - have done suspension, brake bleeding, radio etc. - this doesn't seem that easy to do.

I just checked mine. Australian delivery RHD no previous repair - has a single very precise weld on the bottom of each check strap mount on the B pillars. Looks very factory too me.

And another.
96 TT with 19k miles and original paint. I located the car for the current owner 20 years ago and we've been servicing it since. Amazing, original example.

And to completely skew data... here's a one-owner, late build, original paint, 30k mile '94 C4 Wide Body:

Would a 94 not be a 964?

nope, 993 started in ‘94. My 993 is a 12/93 build so it is a ‘94.

Exactly.
It's a data point. Obviously even in '94 they realized they had a big problem.

TDW993, I don't suppose your car has the small factory weld beads under the brackets?

It has a small weld on the underside of both check straps bracket on the pillars. The paint in the door jams is original so I am almost positive that the welds are from the factory. Perhaps only early 993 production had this? Not sure but it seems that some do and some don’t. It is pretty hit and miss between various cars.

Thank you!

Hit and miss indeed. One crucial observation from my surveying is this: I've seen no broken check strap brackets that have the factory weld bead under the bracket.
