I wish Porsche would make this -- Multifunction Clock / NAV / Audio for dashboard
I watched Porsche create the Classic Radio for us and felt it was a missed opportunity. It's good but not great. The location is the biggest problem for visibility and usability.
A device that would be great would be in the form factor of the dashboard clock and meant to replace the stock clock on the dash. It would be a multifunction computer with a round, high-resolution display. It would have integrated, low-profile buttons on the bezel as it's interface.
It's default screen should be the analog clock displaying current time and looking as close as possible to stock, complete with the simulated idiot lights, but hiding the ability to do all of the things the Classic Radio does. (and more?)
If designed correctly, it could come with a different wiring harness for each of the generations of air-cooled 911s.
Every air-cooled 911 owner I've mentioned this idea to has expressed interest. I don't have the time, energy or financing to attempt to do this myself so I'm putting it out there in the hopes someone else who does have the resources sees the potential and makes it happen because I really want to buy one and I'd pay a lot if it existed.
Please respond to this thread if you too are interested in a device like this or if you have suggestions for functionality or if you have design criticisms.
thanks,
-joe

The newer 911s have the 5th ring on the right (not completely separated like our air cooled ones) that is an MFD that can be configured to do pretty much exactly what you ask. Depending on how original it can look, I would be interested.

Truthfully, it would look a bit out of place in a car of this vintage.

There's really nothing that could be displayed on a dash display that isn't on your phone...I don't get the desire to turn an analog car digital. Part of the charm of a 993 is that it doesn't have LED screens and all that jazz.

I imagine something like this but with a full led screen inside the gauge.
Then you could have it look like the stock clock or toggle thru different menus like this.

I looked on alibaba with the idea of getting a round display and a raspberry pi zero to create a carputer to replace my clock. It is vastly beyond my programming skills to make it work so I gave up on the idea. But I like you think it could be an interesting project that I would consider in my car. Load Torque to communicate with a bluetooth OBD 2 sensor, waze for Nav, I'd find it all useful

some funny responses and not really as much of the enthusiasm i had expected. i do want the smokescreen now too, though. hah
oh well, maybe it looks better in my mind.
not to beat a dead horse, but i watch my dad replace instruments in the cockpit of his A36 from time to time and that certainly doesn't make that aircraft less analog. and some of the new instruments are very cool and have so many functions and are made to fit into the old spaces originally designed for the analog instruments.
and yes, i have the MFD in my 991 and it's very convenient for NAV which is why i still put up with the wacky porsche nav menu options of the PCM 3.1 but that's a b!tch for the 991 form.
cheers and thanks for the responses!
