Default Trany grind

Greetings! Its been a while scenes I’ve posted…been enjoying lots of driving. Winter is not far off here and I’m needing some advice for the yearly winter projects.
when my car and the weather is not hot shifting from 1st to second seems fine, no grind. When the car is at a 9 o’clock or normal temp grinding occurrs from 1st to second. I can feel the lub difference in the shifting. I know this subject has been discussed lots before using different grade oil. Im am using the recommended trany lub. My feeling is when the car or trany is at a lower temperature the lub is thicker…making the synco easier to work ( no grind)
I suspect I need to replace 1st and second syncos?
thought please ?
kind regards
glenn

Possibly synchros, gears, some machining…. What type of gear oil are you using and when was it last changed? Probably won’t know fully until the transmission case is cracked open.

If your motor mounts are original or old, replace them before doing anything. Old mounts have caused shifting issues for lots of people (including me).

Looking at the title I opened this thread expecting a completely different topic.

Took me a minute but pretty funny.

Glenn- before you open your wallet , change your transmission fluid first. Easy to DIY and relatively inexpensive.

I have the same cold grind into second. Shifting to neutral and double clutch before sliding into second will alleviate the grind until the car is warmed up. Running Delvac in the tranny.

Wow, I sometimes have the opposite of the OP. My 1st > 2nd is sketchy when cold but gone when warm.

My bigger problem is downshifting from 3rd > 2nd absolutely requires rev-matching unless I granny shift it lol.

I have a couple of gallons of Delvac I've purchased to swap into the trans and my front diff.

I 2nd the comment about motor mounts. Sort that first.

If that doesn't work, start with fluid. By far the best fluid I've had luck with on Porsche transmissions is Swepco 201. I run it in the 915 and G50.

I fixed this exact issue with motor mounts.

Too bad mine didn't get better. I have new motor mounts as of my last oil change, about 2,500 miles ago now. No difference.

Only other thing I can think of is that my Fister SSK may need tweaking. I'll know if nothing is improved after changing the gear oil. I have no idea what gear oil is in there now anyway and no record of it ever being changed.

I do have a C4 transaxle if that makes any difference in the shifter linkage.

Delvac is not going to help you. There is a reason that Porsche pulled the generic GL5 gearbox lube requirement for the 964 and 993 (and only these two), back in 1998 at the end of production.
