Hi J,
It has been done before and there may even be a kit to do it.
Call these guys and ask them about it. https://www.evwest.com/catalog/produ...roducts_id=224
I would only consider it on a car with a missing or destroyed engine as the long-term value of the car will probably be less than the sum of the value of the remaining original parts kept.
Andy
I contacted them but there is nothing for 993s yet ... they look for cars with no electronics ... I fear there is something about these cars that make it difficult to execute ... I'll follow them as I feel things will change eventually
I'd argue installing a skateboard style EV platform into a 993 is basically turning it into a Tesla with a 993 body. It's not the same car. Far cry from AWD>RWD. Just my opinion, I get it that you don't agree.
If he did some sort of bespoke install with rear weight bias, etc, that could be very interesting. Still won't have an air cooled engine and, I'm sorry, that's an important part of the package. That said, it has the potential to be a cool car if he did some bonkers install like Bisimoto did with a 935
To be fully honest and before raping the car, I'd dream to have a C4S transmission ... but none want to touch the original electronic of the cars. There are some guys in Wales (media is making them famous by the day) and they keep original transmission. In any case, to have rear gear the car requires some transmission.
The problem I have is, I like the car but I don't understand how it work to ask someone to do the job. Thought Rennlist was the place to ask
From an aftermarket offering to the public perspective, these kits will need to be drop-in replacements for people to buy them. In other words; remove fuel tank, drop engine tray/transmission, remove oil cooling system and engine harness, and someone will need to design the motors/controller to bolt into the car the exact same way. For a 993, that would be having them packaged into a factory shaped engine tray. Batteries up front where the spare tire and fuel tank was. The fact is, in 20-30 years people will be taking all kinds of mint condition classic cars and wanting to do these conversions.
That said, for any project, ALWAYS start with the nicest car you can afford.
I agree with you that in 20 years these cars will be transformed and in this project there is a bit of becoming a pioneer that gets me hot, but on this case I fear a body shell is enough, so you can get the car tailor made. also to avoid the feeling to make a Tesla covered on a 993 body the more original features you can get the better ... but I'm not sure there is a right or wrong answer for what you have to keep from the original car, what only you should keep and what you have to remove ...
I have no idea of how good a system this is, but the price isn't completely crazy though I have to think sourcing batteries isn't easy or inexpensive.
In Europe there is not enough supply of batteries to get the car certified. It is impossible as of now ... I'm just getting my feet wet about the idea as they look freaking brilliant and an opportunity as well to enjoy a classic for the next 25 years without worrying about legislation
To me it would make the most sense to find an intact car in need of an engine. That being said, unless you have serious money to burn or the resources to fabricate the required parts to mate a Tesla motor to a Porsche transaxle…I don’t see it happening.
These guys in Wales Electric Classic Cars produce them. It doesn't seem to me simple, but it doesn't look like the most expensive thing on earth. They have some youtube about a classic 911
Is it possible to make a 993 bodied electric car as viscerally engaging as the real thing?
if you want an electric car that looks like a 993 OK, I think you will succeed. But it will never be as satisfying on all levels that a Porsche can.
You don't need the iPad - just the motors and batteries. It's been done before. Not quite full electric but Elephant Racing now offer a hybrid conversion for all 911's going back to 1965. It's by Vonnen and featured on The Smoking Tire. For those in love with their oily bits this may offer a compromise.

Looks exciting ... there is definitely something to dig and see what the options are ... I just read this https://rennlist.com/how-tos/slidesh...ance-potential Seems I am not the only one looking to have a Porsche electric sports car
Why oh why?
Some cars are good specimen for resto-mod, such as Range Rovers, Defenders, BMW 3.0 csi, Jag XKEs... These cars are priced for their shell and not the innards.
Air-cooled Porsches are the exact opposite; which is why you see the likes of Singers tinkering only with the craftsmanship and not the basic engine design.
