This is a very interesting article from the BBC yesterday about the rise of electrification of classic cars driven by regulations in Europe. Many more rare and valuable cars are being converted.

20k GBP strikes me as pretty decent value for a conversion. That's the same as a 3.8 conversion!

I think in 5-10 years we are going to look back on this thread and how all of the people crying foul is hilarious.

The fact is, MANY are going to be converted no matter what some purists opinion is. We may as well embrace it so we can get the aftermarket support needed for this to be a "plug n play" solution that is reversible and is done safely and correctly.

Being as a 911 is designed to have the powertrain removed in the way that it is, it's really perfect for this sort of modular setup. Plus the placement of the batteries can be manipulated to achieve a much better balance. We also know the batteries and probably the charging system will need to be replaced every several years and as time goes on the batteries will get lighter, smaller, and higher capacity. This will mean a re-arrangement of the batteries to maintain the optimal corner balance.

If I had a crystal ball into the future I'd say in 50-75 years that 25%-50% of all 911s will be converted. The rest, the most valuable and rare examples, will be running on synthetic fuel, or will be sitting in museums and collections in a non-running state as static displays.

Personally, I would probably go with an electric conversion for a daily and petrol engine original running on synfuel for my weekend fun toy/collector car.

I don't care if someone wants to do it. I personally have zero interest, so embrace it? No, not for me.

Seems like the 911 will never go electric according to a recent interview from F. Walliser : https://www.focus.de/auto/neuheiten/..._24262007.html

Never is a long time. Controlling the future is hard. I remember reading the 928 was supposed to replace the 911... But maybe they will spare the 911 heritage and rebadged the coupe body style to put an end to the IC line, but they didn't do that for the water cool conversion. A passion from customers/owners is not the same as shareholders/CEOs.

For the foreseeable future, a 993 E conversion will be for style over substance as engineering a near term solution will be full of compromises. The 993 was the pinnacle of air cooled non-comprise, it sets a high bar.

But still, an interesting design / engineering challenge to keep the charm if not the soul.

Is this a trick question? The obvious answer is to move.
