Refinish "Targa" wheels?
Anyone had the 17" two-piece Targa wheels refinished? The folks at Wheel Enhancement claim that the wheel can't be disassembled and, therefore, cannot be refinished. I know those guys are highly recommended, just wanted to know if anyone had a second opinion. I thought one of the advantages of two piece rims was that it gave you more repair options if needed.....

Hi Curtis,
I talked to a local refinisher here in Vancouver that I used on my previous car (83SC - Fuch's) about the Targa wheels. He told me they can be taken apart, refinished and rebuilt. About $135-$180 CDN ($85 - $115US) per wheel. However I have not tried it (yet) so I don't know if I show up he tells me "hmmm, that is not what I expected!".
Be good to post what you find out. I am sure the Targa wheels are not that different than the other two or three piece wheels.
I am also thinking of retiring these wheels and getting some others, such as the RUF wheels. I don't like all the little bolts on these wheels, personal preference I guess.
Cheers!
Mike

Curious to know why W.E. thinks the wheels must be disassembled for painting.
Service Information - Tech Bulletins Book N
(Jan - Dec 1997) includes the following entry:
Concern: Painting 17 inch Targa Design wheels
Information: Special protective sleeves are
available through the Parts Department for
painting Targa design wheels. The sleeves are
made of paper material and are used to cover the
bolt heads on the wheels. Each wheel requires
24 sleeves when painting.
Parts Info: Part 000 043 203 81
Package of 100 sleeves
(so you get 1 spare per wheel )
Please let me know if you are able to order these, and from where. I haven't tried yet.

I have a 97 targa with the same wheels, I had called Wheel Enhancement to see if they could chrome the wheels. They told me that taking them apart and chroming them as separate entities would ruin the wheels as they would not re-assemble correctly. However, they did offer refinished wheels of the same type as a trade.
