Post Differences between '95 993 vs. '96-'98 993

I am considering purchasing a 993 and was wondering if someone that has driven both the '95 model and the '96-'98 model could tell me the performance differences.
I know that in '96 Porsche added Variocam and +12 hp from '95. Really how much faster does the car feel? Does anyone know the cars 0-60,1/4 mile times in the mags at that time?
Any input would be extremely helpful, thanks in advance. <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

See the post earlier today "993 C4 re-mapping"...

Purely in terms of performance the '96my Varioram equipped cars have more torque lower down and are therefore faster and easlier to drive quickley on the public.
Despite the claimed 12hp extra power they don't really give any extra power beyond 4000-4500rpm.

At the track you'd never notice the differance.

Other than that there are no differances in performance.

If you can run to the extra expense get a later '96my car, but I'd advise you buy the best car (condition, history etc) you can find regardless of whether it's a varioram model or not.

The varioram dropped 0-60/quarter mile times by 0.1s, to 5.3s/13.8s. It also raised the top speed by 3 mph, to 171 mph.

I agree that with Porsches, one should always buy the best car that fits the budget. As an owner of a 95 993 with 70K miles, I love my car, but it often takes Porsche a year or two to get everything "just right." That said, I have come to expect perfection from Porsche, so even a model year that has a few issues is a better built car than 99.99% of the cars on the road.

The 95's had some major and minor issues to be sure, but their performance is breathtaking. I have owned several Porsches and agree with many Rennlisters that the 95-98 993s represent the pinnacle of Porsche engineering and quality.

Would I sell my 95 C2 to get a 96-98? No, but I would entertain the idea of moving up to a 96-97 C4S as an interim step towards a Twin Turbo. The all-wheel drive comes in real handy here in the rainy Seattle area.

The 95's represent a great value, and as long as a given vehicle is in great shape, and free of major issues, like the '95 wiring harness issue, I would buy the best car you can find.

Happy hunting!

Thanks Tom,
What specific issues do you suggest that I look into for the '95MY? Wiring Harnesses? I will be buying a 993 from my Porsche dealer anyway and I am sure that the car he finds me will be trouble free. I would like to hear some more info about your car. I was planning on using the 993 as my one of my daily drivers to work.
Thanks for the info, it is greatly appreciated.

My biased opinion, based on 68K happy relatively trouble-free miles on a '95:

Performance wise, I don't think you'll notice any seat-of-the pants differences between '95 and later years. Stop putting so much faith in magazines; you'll never beat the daylights out of a car like they do, esp. on a daily driver. The '95 wiring harness problems and associated serial nos. are prob. things to consider; think E. J. is the guy with all the info - do a search under "wiring harness". One easy way to get a good '95 is get a serial no. car built in '95 I think.

I personally feel the '96 and later had the better fuel injection; plus it's OBDII so if you feel inclined to do your own troubleshooting there's hardware and software readily available - not the case with '95 OBD I system. Then again, the "Immobilizer" keyless remote locking system on later cars ('96 and up?)I feel should be avoided like the plague; if the battery dies in your keyless entry you're the one who's "immobilized" (think this beast was an option). They clutch slave cylinder problem I thinks is a generic problem; do an archive search. For looks alone I prefer the later cars with the 3rd brake light above the rear window rather than the "handlebar" on mine but them's the breaks.

Otherwise, the car condition and service records would take more precedence unless you're bound and determined to get one of the "fat body" "S" models - or the C4S with the Turbo brakes (which I believe also had a beefier hydraulic brake boost to along with the larger calipers).

Happy hunting!

(P.S. _"Trouble-free"?? I feel so. I had a engine crankshaft bearing seal go shortly after purchase at about 6000 miles - fixed under warranty. Besides maintenance items and a stone-damaged windshield only problem was the generic clutch slave cylinder. This has been the most trouble-free 911 I ever owned; past ones were a '76 911S and a '84 Carrera Turbo-Look.)
