Great news, the new starter seems to have fixed the issue.
Notes on the starter recommended above, which I ordered.

It is shorter which made it easier to install.
It is lighter, which made it easier to install!!!

It is shorter, which caused concern about its performance.
I should not have been worried about that, because:
OMG, did it really spin over the engine sooo much faster!

I anyone is having starter issues, and confirmed it is the starter, I definitely recommend this starter.
For those curious about the size, see photos below.

Probably a high torque permanent magnet motor in the new one. Good solution.

Techman1, thanks for posting this and to all those that contributed! My car does the exact same thing periodically and only when hot. I think I'll just buy the starter and swap it out.

Am I safe to assume you bought the one in the Ebay link in post # 28 above?
