Default Carfax

Hi everyone,
I purchased a 1998 Cabrio 993 about 2 years ago. Carfax shows 2 accidents but after some digging and e-mails I have 3 reports that show a clean no accident car. I've been in touch with Carfax and they can't help me because they say they have reports of 2 accidents but can't prove them. Should I be doing something else or just forget about it. I plan on keeping the car for a very long time and then giving it to one of my Kids.
Thanks for your time.
Mitch

I would research how to resolve it.

Sometimes people feel they will never sell, but then change their mind.

Interesting. Could such a carfax be viewed as libel?

First post, so take this with a grain of salt if you wish. I have no idea why people take Carfax as the definitive answer to car history. Had a Honda S2000 that my wife & I were involved in a head-on collision with an an uninsured driver. It took $18 grand to get it back on the road, never showed up on Carfax .

Carfax completely missed the first (2 year lease) driver for my 993.

I would not take Carfax as gospel.

Awhile back I bought a '96 Audi S6 with known accident damage, seller disclosed . Carfax reflected that. Had the car 5 years, somehow the date of the accident changed and now it looked like the accident happened while I owned the car. Most people do a carfax when they buy a car, not on a car they are selling.

It is harder to sell a car when Carfax says it was in an accident, I didn't care because I knew I would be keeping the car for a while. It isn't right that Carfax is as powerful as they are.

Carfax relies on repair shops to report damage. I have known shops to respond to a request NOT to report damage. This means Carfax is worthless as a resource regarding repair work done. You are really on your own.

Check a recent PCA TechTalk video re: collision repair. The shop owner in MD, a nationally known Porsche repair and restoration facility, states clearly that reporting an accident and damage to Carfax is optional- up to the shop to decide.
Many stories in these posts how Carfax is in error, positively or negatively. Even when police reports are filed, things don't always get included.

The other bad thing about car fax is that if you get a tiny scratch on say a bumper in a parking lot from someone and its reported to insurance or police it will show up

An incident that results in a police crash report or an insurance claim could have ranged from someone backing up into the car in a parking lot, to a low-speed rear-end that just needed a bumper cover to a major impact involving the unibody. Just get the car inspected by a body shop. They can tell you the nature of any repairs that have been done on the car.

My car has had two accidents involving insurance claims and therefore are likely listed on carfax. One was where a pickup truck put a tow ball through the rear bumper cover backing up at Krogers- a nice clean small hole, the other, 16 years ago, a very low-speed collision where I rolled under the bumper skirt of the car in front of me at a light as I was distracted by my young daughter in the car at the time. I had the bumper cover, hood, and quarter panel skin replaced. The damage was minor but all three items got scraped. Since it was all new parts at the time and the repair was done at Stoddard's Porsche restoration grade shop it is not relevant for the integrity of the body or corrosion perspective.
