I needed to completely disassemble my 993 side view mirrors, as my whole car is being repainted and I'm doing all "R&R" (remove & reinstall). For the life of me I could not find a detailed how-to with pictures on here or Pelican, etc. Just a few text based comments that still didn't do much to help visualize the process of disassembly.
I ended up making a "spring compressor tool" that someone described on Pelican (though the screw size must have been a typo; too small). Also, the wiring removal threw me for a loop. Based on how the connecter looks in the base of the mirror, you'd think you need to remove the wires from the back of the motor and pull the wires out (don't try, they're soldered). In reality, the wires are removed at the opposite end. You'll see what I mean in the pics.
Anyway, hope this helps some folks in the future because a motor drop was easier to figure out than this was, LOL!
Tools needed:
- various Philips head screw drivers
- small flat head screw driver
- 14MM Allen bit
- ratchet (for the large Allen bit)
- 13MM open end wrench
- needle nose pliers
Supplies for "compressor tool":
- M8 x 50mm long countersunk screw with a flat top
- M8 hex nut
- 5/16" ID fender washer, OD 1 to 1-1/4"
- spacer (see pics for more details) - 1/4" tall x 1 to 1-1/4" OD

Great write up and thanks for taking the time to enlighten us. I could have done with this last year. Turns out both my electric motors packed in at the same time.
Outstanding write up and photos. For years to come folks will find this thread while searching this forum or Google and be singing your praises. You'll never know, but there will be a lot of people in your debt.
