Post Poll: Do you block out your license plate when you post car pics?

Someone on my BMW Roadfly site said I could be open to identity fraud if I post a pic with my license plate showing. Couldn't someone just write my plate # down when he saw it around town and do the same thing?

Do you block out the plate # on your pics, if you ever post pics?

<Obligatory P-car content> Drove the 993 around all day today running errands and really burned up some pavement. This car feels light as a feather compared to my ole 88 911, and seems MUCH faster, especially from a start. The light feeling of the steering makes all the difference in driving ease. I was usually beat after running errands all day in the 88.

I took our new Ocicat kitty cat to the vet and put her in her cat cage in the back seat. She meowed the whole way there, but on the way home, the sweet engine notes lulled her to a deep sleep and didn't hear one peep out of her .

After posting these new pics of the "other car" on my BMW site http://members.cardomain.com/stever500 , a few people suggested blotting out the license plate. I think the pics looked crummy after doing so, so I never uploaded them. Thoughts?

No I don't bother because I change my plates three-four times a year. If I switch my insurance from the p-car to my Truck I get a new plate..in BC the truck plates are different than the car plates. I used to have a plate with "911" on it but I lost that years ago.......

I'm having a little trouble figuring out why blocking your plate is a smart or necessary thing to do. Maybe I'm just not devious enough. So here goes... my California plate is "993 TWIN".

post your car on the bmw board with the plate shown below covering up your original....you know, for security (I actually have a 5 series, and my 65 year old mother has a 3 series convertible...but we aren't as uptight as the bmw owners you hang with!!) max

These days, can't be too safe, but I also think it would be pretty tough to do anything with, since you actually drive around with it prominently displayed on your car. Likely a bit of paranoia, but yes, I do block mine. Not so much of identity theft, but just real theft...trace lic plate to address, know a Porsche lives there. Not so concerned about rennlist folks as much as someone who just visits to look at license plates.

Your plate number is public record. With that and 10.00 (I think) you can go to the registry and get owner info, including Drivers license number. Until a few years ago, this great Commonwealth used your social for the lisence number, and theft became a real problem. That is fixed now, but it was an issue, at least in MA.

Steve, I wondered that myself, and Graham's answer is on that thread.

But check out DJ's answer. It's a classic.

I post mine on there like everyone else said you drive around with it on there and thousands of people see it everyday. You used to be able to get information throught the DL bureau now you have to fill out a form with your info. So if someone decides to use your plate and personal information it can't be obtained unless you verify that you are the owner of the vehicle. I wouldn't worry about it.

Hey Jack, cool picture. When did you get that road bazooka installed on the top? Or is that a laser beam from one of Dr. Evil's sharks?

Is it speed sensitive? Just pops up when you go too slow so you can eliminate whatever idiot driver is slowing you down?

Does Gert sell it, or is it a strictly a grey market item?
